This template can be used to provide a link to the Encyclopædia Britannica's article on a given subject.

In the complex subjects the topicId approach to referencing the Britannica online articles (as used by {{Britannica}}) no longer works (for example, all architecture-related articles appear to have the same topicId 32876).

Usage

edit

This template may only be used as an inline reference in an article on a related subject.

Parameters

edit

Unnamed parameters:

{{Britannica URL | URL }}
{{Britannica URL | URL | TITLE }}
{{Britannica URL | URL | TITLE | AUTHOR }}

Named parameters:

{{Britannica URL | url=URL }}
{{Britannica URL | url=URL | title=TITLE }}
{{Britannica URL | url=URL | title=TITLE | author=AUTHOR }}

Combination:

{{Britannica URL | URL | author=AUTHOR }}

Finding the URL

edit

A typical Britannica URL for large subjects is https://www.britannica.com/topic/DOMAIN/ARTICLE. For example, https://www.britannica.com/topic/architecture/Space-and-mass covers the "Space and mass" topic of the architecture domain. Note that many topics, like science, have different format, https://www.britannica.com/DOMAIN/ARTICLE, for example https://www.britannica.com/plant/daffodil.

Resulting output

edit

The template produces a link with the URL https://www.britannica.com/URL. The URL of topic/architecture/Space-and-mass will result in a link to the "Space and mass" article as described above.

TITLE provides an optional title for the link in place of the name of the Wikipedia article, in case the Britannica article has a different name for some reason (e.g. a Latin rather than a common name). For example, the Wikipedia article for the wild daffodil is titled "Narcissus pseudonarcissus", while Britannica uses "daffodil"

{{Britannica URL|plant/daffodil|daffodil}}

result:

daffodil at the Encyclopædia Britannica

AUTHOR adds an optional author at the beginning of the output.

{{Britannica URL|440971|pancreas|Robert D. Utiger}}

result:

Robert D. Utiger, pancreas at the Encyclopædia Britannica
