West Paterson to Woodland Park

The name change is official...time to let it go and move on —Preceding unsigned comment added by Woodlandpark (talkcontribs) 19:40, 12 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I tried to do some research on my own using reliable sources and could not find an acceptable answer to the question of when the name change takes effect, immediately or as of some date, usually January 1st. As all my efforts had failed, I did some original research and called the offices of the Borough of West Paterson and spoke to the office of the administrator today (November 6). What I was told is that the results of the referendum are still not final, as there are more provisional ballots outstanding (some 65) than the 31vote margin that included regular and absentee votes. I was told that the Passaic County Board of Elections will not have a final tally for as long as another two to three weeks. I was also told that the referendum simply asked if voters wanted the name of the municipality changed to Woodland Park. As there was no date specified, the individual I spoke to in the administrator's office stated that they were "doing research" to determine when the name change would take effect under law. Even when the change is official, I was told that the changeover will be gradual, with the change made on official stationery, checks, police cars, buildings, on a case-by-case basis. Based on this information, I believe that the move of the article title from West Paterson to Woodland Park was probably premature, though I would not necessarily revert it back. I will certainly keep up on this case and encourage anyone else with more (or conflicting) information to provide it here for further discussion. Alansohn (talk) 15:36, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I searched a little bit online and couldn't find anything, reliable or not, giving the date. If the borough doesn't know when it will become Woodland Park, I can't imagine how we could know; consequently, I think it altogether more in keeping with policies such as Verifiability to restore this to the previous name format. By the way, as the sources on this article treat the change-the-name vote pretty much as certain, I treated the idea as certain, as (unless I'm missing something) the things that the office told you aren't published. Nyttend (talk) 23:42, 6 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
I have added a reliable source that basically backs up my original research as shown above. While it seems most likely that the item will pass, the issue of the timing is still up in the air and the article name (and references therein) should not be changed until these issues are resolved. there are no issues except for people not liking the new name. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Woodlandpark (talkcontribs) 14:36, 13 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have no issue with the new name. However, the new name has not been ratified, nor has it taken effect. An article from The Record has been added to support the current status. Please respond to the source. Alansohn (talk) 14:44, 13 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

http://www.westpaterson.com/ its on the borough's own website, the name is changed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Woodlandpark (talkcontribs) 15:22, 13 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

(FYI, to sign your name type four tildes -- ~~~~ after your remarks.) The West Paterson website stats that for Election 2008 UNOFFICIAL RESULTS (11:12 pm, Nov. 4) for Change Name to “Woodland Park” were Yes – 2,125, No – 2,094. Underneath, the site notes that "Results include Absentees. 101 Provisional ballots not counted when above results were tallied." The Borough does not consider the results official. The source provided from the Record shows that the results are not official, that it may still take another week and that the borough has to determine when the name change will take effect. Please respect these sources and refrain from changing the article until consensus is reached here that the change is official. Alansohn (talk) 15:39, 13 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Name change official, Woodland Park name change won by 25 votes http://www.philly.com/philly/wires/ap/news/state/new_jersey/20081126_ap_westpatersonnamechangewonatpolls.html. Please do not change back to West Paterson until it is overturned by another referendum Woodlandpark (talk) 18:05, 26 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

According to the very article you linked to, there has been no decision on when this will become official. Until such time, this should and will remain at West Paterson. either way (talk) 13:23, 28 November 2008 (UTC)Reply
