Disclosure

This article was contributed by an employee of Willis Group, on his/her own time, solely to foster knowledge about the expedition and the elements contributing to its importance (the science, world record attempt, and communications technology). The employee was not asked to contribute the article as part of his/her employment. The employee has no relationship with Parker Liautaud and has never met or communicated with him. It should be noted that Mr. Liautaud began planning this expedition as early as December 2012. Mr. Liautaud did not approach Willis or the other supporters about the expedition until spring of 2013.

Willis' sole purpose in supporting the expedition is to further the scientific endeavor--a major survey of the South Pole--which will produce data that will be used to inform catastrophe models to better mitigate and manage natural and man-made disasters. The expedition builds on many years of significant investment in climate science, earth observation and natural hazard risk assessment by the Willis Research Network (WRN) in partnership with academic institutions around the world. As stated in City University London's Wikipedia article (emphasis added), "In September 2006, City University joined the Willis Research Network (WRN), a major, long-term partnership between leading international scientific institutions (including the universities of Bristol, Cambridge, Durham and Imperial College London) and the global insurance broker, Willis Group Holdings. The purpose of the network is to evaluate the frequency, severity and impact of catastrophes such as hurricanes, earthquakes, floods and terrorism."
