Reviewer: Wizardman Help review good articles 19:03, 1 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Due to the size of the article (at 51kb of prose, it might be the largest article I've reviewed), I'm splitting the review up in sections, and will get to each in due time.

Lead

No issues. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 00:14, 6 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Early life and career

edit
  • "he began to work in the railway engine sheds in Mirfield in around 1893, progressing to the stores department in 1894." what does stores department mean?
    • Not clear on what this was except it involved storage of railway equipment. The source I used does not go into details. I have tried to clear it up, but if it still is unclear, I will take it out and just say that he worked on the railway.--Sarastro1 (talk) 21:53, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

First class cricketer

edit

Beginning:

  • "There can be no doubt as to the greatness of his achievements last summer... His qualities as a slow bowler struck everyone as being exceptional," Cite needed.
  • I'd use the full name of the Wisden Almanac on its first mention, just for convenience, since i wasn't sure what it was at first.
Both done.--Sarastro1 (talk) 18:53, 13 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

From all-rounder:

  • "Before the tour, it had been said by K. S. Ranjitsinhji that while Rhodes might score plenty of runs in Australia, he "would not take a dozen wickets" in first-class cricket." Cite needed.
  • ""Rhodes was, as regards the whole tour, the most effective bowler", refuting "those who prophesied that he would be a failure in Australia."" Cite needed.
Both done.--Sarastro1 (talk) 23:44, 14 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Opening batsmen:

  • ""the weak point of the team was a lack of class and stability in the batting. Among the fourteen players only Hobbs would at home have been sure of his place in a Test match for batting alone."" Cite needed.
  • ""was too cautious to please the crowd," Wisden said that "his steadiness was invaluable to his side."" cn.
Both done.--Sarastro1 (talk) 10:28, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Career after the war

edit

Returning:

  • No issues

Senior prof:

  • "While Rhodes' biographer, Sidney Rogerson, denied many of these stories were true" his biographer is mentioned several times before this; move the name to the first mention.
As Rhodes had 2 biographers, I've changed first mention to "Rhodes' biographer, Sidney Rogerson" and all other mentions to "Sidney Rogerson" to avoid confusion.--Sarastro1 (talk) 10:28, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Recalled:

  • "He went on to take four for 44, and Wisden's verdict was that his selection "was crowned with complete success, the bowling of the veteran Yorkshireman proving no small factor in determining the issue of the struggle."" cn
Done.--Sarastro1 (talk) 10:28, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Style and personality

edit
  • "EW Swanton described Rhodes as a "craftsman rather than an artist" when it came to batting" Is EW without the initial markings right? Just double checking.
Missed this one! Done now.--Sarastro1 (talk) 10:41, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • "He was one of the first batsmen to adopt the "two-eyed stance"" Is there an article that two-eyes stance could link two, or could it be explained? Nevermind, was in the above section. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 03:36, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Personal life

edit
  • "They lived in a shared farm house at Bog Hall near Kirkheaton." I presume this means they shared it with another family?

Misc.

edit

No deadlinks, types and quantity of references is good, no disambiguations, refs come after punctuation (I caught one iffy one). WP:ALTTEXT does need to be added for an FA-quality article (if you want to wait until FAC time to do this, that's fine).

Will add ALTTEXT once I have learned how to do it! Any help is appreciated!--Sarastro1 (talk) 22:10, 8 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I have no idea how to do it myself, heh. Most of my articles end up not having images due to the time period. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 03:18, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
  • Review's gone. I'll put the article on hold and pass when the tweaks are made. My only other issue is at times the prose starts feeling like it is dragging a bit, but that's likely due to my admitted lack of interest in cricket as opposed to any actual issues with the article. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 04:37, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
I'd probably agree! My sympathy for reading something this long with no interest in cricket!!! I'm thinking of taking it to FAR and will try to make it drag less before I do. Otherwise, everything sorted, I think.--Sarastro1 (talk) 10:28, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
Everything looks good now, so I'll pass the article. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 16:40, 15 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
