Etymology

edit

The only sources I can find online point to these shoes being vel-skoen (hide-shoes), not veld-skoen (field-shoes). (Like [1] and Merriam-Webster.) This apparently academic source says the veld meaning was "later assimilated" into the word. And there seem to be old sources where they're referred to as "vel-skoen" (with the hyphen).

Any objection to me changing the etymology back to "skin-shoe"? Or are there sources out there I haven't seen that hammer down the "field-shoe" origin? --grant (talk) 16:51, 30 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

As native Afrikaaner I can confirm they are not called Veldskoene, I've never heard of them referred to as such. The slang Vellies doesn't make sense if they were (it would be Veldies). 105.186.38.96 (talk) 16:33, 13 March 2023 (UTC)Reply

I can't seem to find anything either. All I found was this link which describes the characteristics of the shoe. RegistryKey (talk) 14:35, 28 September 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi, why would you remove a current picture of what Veldskoen look like? Rosszondagh (talk) 07:20, 20 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
