Tūroa or Turoa?
editThe offical website started using macrons for "Tūroa". It may well be appropriate to use macrons. yvanyblog(talk) 10:43, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- @Yvanyblog:. The relevant policy is set out here: WP:NAMECHANGES and here: WP:OFFICIALNAMES. Editors generally check for widespread use of a new or modified name before an article name change is implemented. It is likely to be some time before the form with a macron is used widely in independent reliable sources. However, my perception is that there is now much greater public acceptance and use of macrons in names than would have been the case a few years ago, and perhaps the use of the form Tūroa with a macron will grow quite quickly. I note that there is already a redirect from the form Tūroa with a macron. Marshelec (talk) 19:53, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- These four sources have started using macrons: [1] [2] [3][4]. yvanyblog(talk) 20:54, 10 November 2023 (UTC)
- It is worth monitoring news items over the next few months to see if there is any more widespread use of the form with the macron. There are many news items from 2023 that do not use the form with a macron. The use of the macron is not particularly common as yet. I found one source that used the macron in the article title, but not in the body ! [5]. Although not critically important to changing the name of the article, I found that the New Zealand Gazetteer does not currently use the form with a macron.[6]. - Please do not use the form with the macron as name of article as it refers to commercial activities until the Iwi is ok with this. See article for references to the issue. ChaseKiwi (talk) 18:33, 20 October 2024 (UTC)
