Talk:Turning circle

Latest comment: 3 years ago by Sauer202 in topic Merge proposal

It seems rather than write this page, a redirect to 'turning radius' was added.

'Turning circle' is the correct term in the UK to describe the ability of a vehicle to turn its tightest corner.

I have made a start with the page but additional material such as diagrams would help - for those skilled in wiki diagrams! The diagrams on 'turning radius' are confusing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.64.1.38 (talkcontribs) August 17, 2017 23:32:29 (UTC)

Hi there, on Wikipedia, frequently articles are created as redirects (as a matter of fact, to get to that page I sent you through a redirect for convenience), and there are a lot of reasons for it. In this case, the redirect is from Turning circle to Turning radius. As the page explains (I did change it some to make it more clear) the two terms are synonyms for one another (and turning circle might be correct in the UK, but turning radius is correct in other places), so instead of having two articles covering the same topic we only have the one. If you'd like to contribute to that page to make it even more clear, I'm sure everyone would appreciate it. menaechmi (talk) 15:50, 18 August 2017 (UTC) I will not be following this page, so if you'd like to continue this conversation, please do so at my talk page. Merge proposal

edit

There's a June merge proposal, reflecting discussions on both pages and a bit of re-direct swapping over a decade. The key issue seems to be be US versus UK article naming, given differences in use in those two countries. Given that Turning radius was created first (2006), and that Turning circle was nothing but a redirect until 2017, can I suggest that the 'Americans got there first' and we should merge to Turning radius. Yes, I know that its an absurd term, but it is apparently in common use and hence satisfies WP:COMMONNAME, and no one language is preferred to another (WP:TITLEVAR). Since these two articles are on the same subject I have performed the merge of Turning circle into Turning radius, and tried to give a short explanation in the introduction about the difference between diameter and radius. Sauer202 (talk) 11:35, 14 February 2021 (UTC)Reply
