Edit Request: Grammatical Error

The very first sentence, "Tumblr, stylized in their logo as tumblr., is a ..." is grammatically wrong. It should be "Tumblr, stylized in its logo as tumblr., is a ..."

Advertisment ?

I agree. "takes only 30 seconds to sign up" might be (almost) true, but it has no bearing on the article. Karandr (talk) 11:28, 16 October 2009 (UTC)

It does indeed. I would put a warning label on the top, but I can never figure out how. Please someone who knows how, go ahead and do it. (And maybe tell me, I ought to be able by now.) GcT (talk) 15:11, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

I disagree, no one has advertised their blogs. For example, follow one of the most popular blogs on tumblr today, rebelliouss-spirit.tumblr.com

Meaning?

"Jeff Rock created the Tumblr app for the iPhone, which was acquired by Tumblr in 2009." Does this mean that Tumblr has acquired iPhone or one iPhone or what? Maybe they acquired the app? What does that mean? Confusing wording, someone should rewrite this.--35.9.42.152 (talk) 22:23, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

I fixed this: "In 2009, Tumblr acquired the Tumblr iPhone app that was created by Jeff Rock." I also undid an edit to fix, "On March 17, 2010, the Tumblr really have said no to this staff blog announced that Tumblr is now accessible on BlackBerry smart phones." Ablatner (talk) 02:46, 11 July 2010 (UTC)

The current wording of "Apple Inc. App Store application" just sounds ridiculous. As if we're trying to promote this newfangled concept or something. Perhaps "iOS app" would suffice? 66.49.226.137 (talk) 14:10, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

Well, while editing the article about Yasemin Mori, I could't add her "official" tumblr account due to spam.

Comparison to other blogging platforms?

Is this a section worth adding? Would be good to see why this service is used or ignored by different bloggers.

For example Tumblr's multimedia capabilities and its ease of posting content are its strength, but it lacks some features that other blogging platforms have.(Joetimes (talk) 09:49, 21 April 2010 (UTC))

I seem to be one of the few people on earth that doesnät like Tumblr. It would indeed be good to see some opinions on both sides of the aisle. YellowAries2010 (talk) 17:07, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

I just want to say that I agree with the IP user who has deleted the post limit section. It's not really relevant, and it has no citations. It's basically just an un-encyclopedic protest against the limit. Cadwaladr (talk) 07:41, 29 November 2011 (UTC)

Tumblr is a tool

Tumblr is a new age way of blogging that can be complex. Tumblr is a tool used to post pictures you've taken and also allows you freedom to post things that interest you. Tumblr also allows you freedom to customize your page and add music to it. Most people use Tumblr for posting pictures or "reblogging" which is what you do when you see a picture you like that you want visible on your page. Tumblr can however be inappropriate to some who are not of age due to freedom of posting anything that include profanity, sex, drugs, etc but for the most part it is a cool tool that most bloggers love! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.197.0.24 (talk) 05:04, 24 January 2012 (UTC)

Tumblr's features

Tumblr has a number of different features. One can post text, pictures, external links, videos, and audio. There are three main types of text that users can post: normal text, a quote, and a conversation between two people. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jennji (talkcontribs) 02:03, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Usage

According to Tumblr's About page, "The average Tumblr user creates 14 original posts each month, and reblogs 3. Half of those posts are photos. The rest are split between text, links, quotes, music, and video." [1] --Julczeskleba (talk) 20:36, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

Laughs because her dashboard is filled litterally 8am-1am everyday. I think your statistics are a bit off, seeing as Tumblr is an emotion dump/Homestuck Country/Yaoi City, most of the people on there are always on Tumblr, therefore your statistics are incorrect. Hey, I'm not saying I hate Tumblr, I actually love it! On another note, someone needs to mention the majority of the Tumblr population is fans of Homestuck. 71.168.71.88 (talk) 19:16, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

I agree, I would check your statistics because most of the hardcore bloggers post up to the limit everyday... and there are alot of hardcore bloggers on tumblr. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.68.95.202 (talk) 12:35, 21 December 2012 (UTC)

Ask/Roleplaying Blogs

"Many ask blogs-blogs that users send questions to, which are usually replied to in art form-have been created on it, Homestuck and My Little Pony appearing frequently as ask blogs. Sherlock blogs exist as well. Some of these have developed into roleplaying blogs."

Not only is this poorly written, how is this necessary and important information? 118.209.4.94 (talk) 03:46, 2 May 2012 (UTC)

seconded. Wikipedia should have a rule that bars 13-year-old fandom nerds from editing prominent articles like this one. B. Hussein Soetoro (talk) 16:49, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

Thirded. I'd remove the Sherlock references (way too specific, tumblr is not *that* narrow) myself, but I don't get an edit button and I'm not going to bother finding my account details to log in and see if that helps. If anything content specific needs to be on there it probably should be a reference to, as a podcaster put it the other day, "even if you don't think you know tumblr, you've probably looked at porn on it". 80.101.113.45 (talk) 21:05, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Well, that is correct, how a majority are fandom/fandumb blogs. And to the person dissing "13-year-old fandom nerds", you seriously don't know their power, they could beat you in an instant... SHABAM. Don't mess with Homestucks. Number one rule on the internet.71.168.71.88 (talk) 19:20, 3 August 2012 (UTC)

Basic Tumblr Information

Tumblr was founded in 2007 by David Karp. It is a customizable micro-blogging site that is mostly used as a way for users to share their interests and express themselves through a variety of media including: text, photos, quotes, links, audio files, and video files. Currently, Tumblr has 105 employees and is continuing to grow; its offices are in New York City and Richmond, Virginia. The site is available in 13 different languages. There are 54.7 million blogs and 22.6 billion blog posts. On average, there are about 62 million posts per day. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.33.242.75 (talk) 01:50, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Mobile App

Tumblr is available as a mobile application on the following smart phones: iPhone, Android, and blackberry. It is available in 7 different languages. The mobile app was created in 2011 and is free to download on the devices. It allows you all of the same media sharing options as the website: text, photo, link, quote, audio, and video. The app allows you to share things on the go. The biggest critique that the app has received is that it closes unexpectedly; it has many bugs that still need to be worked out. Another common complaint is that there is no search bar to search users or tags. Overall, the app has received very average reviews from the users of all 3 devices. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.33.242.75 (talk) 02:01, 8 May 2012 (UTC)

Edit request on 10 May 2012

Tumblr is an easy to use site, requiring only a username/password/email address to begin and then you are set. This site is user-generated and requires the posts of its users in order to survive. You are able to follow and search for different users, and you can even search for specific tags in order to find what you are looking for.

This site is up and coming in the social media site, with celebrities adding their own pages every day. Tumblr is a spot for people to express their opinions and develop their online personalities based on their own ideas and those that influence them. Bmzingler (talk) 04:45, 10 May 2012 (UTC)

"tumblelog"

The first section mentions that Tumblr blogs are named "tumblelogs". It may have been called that some time ago, but it seems that Tumblr now sticks to just calling the blogs "blogs". The word "tumblelog" does not appear on the about page, in the terms of service, or, as far as I can tell, anywhere else on the non-user-generated part of the page (all the www.tumblr.com/tumblelog/xyz links redirect to www.tumblr.com/blog/xyz). --Allion (talk) 18:11, 12 September 2012 (UTC)

Edit request on 27 March 2013

Sorry, I'm new to this and I'm not sure if this is the correct place to suggest this, but I feel like the "User Types" section has too much voice, is biased, and looks unprofessional.

For example, in the fourth sentence, "etc." is spelled as "ect." Later on, referring to the "fangirls" of tumblr the "invented" (citation?) phrases have the commas outside the quotation marks and the phrase that they are "sarcastic about anything and everything" seems cliche. Furthermore, most sentences start with "there have" or "they are," which is dead construction, and Tumblr isn't capitalized throughout. Lastly, the statements about "Hipster" blogs posting images of self-harm and the girls behind "peppy" blogs being popular on Facebook (uncapitalized) seem like broad generalizations.

Thank you

Ecohen22 (talk) 17:31, 28 March 2013 (UTC)

One section added by this project group, Culture, was removed by an editor on 29 Mar with some fairly cryptic comments on the edit description line. In what ways could this section be improved (we are aware that there needs to be more citations and the format for several need to be corrected)? Reporting on the number and kinds of users and uses associated with Tumblr would seem to be relevant to what the article is trying to do. We would be glad to hear contrary or additional opinions on whether this section can potentially be helpful in making the article better. Marco Arment as Co-Founder

The article calls Marco Arment a "co-founder", citing a news article Marco characterized himself on Twitter as "technically an employee, not a founder." I have no idea what's accurate and am not editing the article, just noting the discrepancy. Nelson (talk) 16:42, 18 May 2013 (UTC)

Both statements are kinda true. Arment was an employee of Karp's and was not a founder of Tumblr, Inc (the company). He did co-found/co-create Tumblr (the website) though. Are websites founded? The Business Insider article says Arment "was named cofounder and CTO earlier this year [2010]." Can someone be retroactively named a founder of a company? I'll see if I can find another source for this happening to help clarify. In the meantime, I'll tone the article down by considering Arment the co-creator of Tumblr, rather than a co-founder. - Kollision (talk) 05:38, 20 May 2013 (UTC)

Yahoo! may be buying Tumblr

And this has the site up in a shit storm at the moment. --Matt723star (talk) 18:23, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

Your "up in a shit storm" is pretty subjective and vague, without any (reliable) sources. I did find this TechCrunch article though, which claims that "Tumblr's users are almost universally unhappy with the news that [...]". --82.170.113.123 (talk) 18:34, 19 May 2013 (UTC)
It's one of those things where you have to be on the site to know. If they did a survey I'm sure the reaction would be negative, considering Tumblr users feel strongly about Yahoo! possibly changing the game of the site up, with their anti-porn status which would limit many blogs who not only post porn but blogs who post fanfiction or fanart. --Matt723star (talk) 18:51, 19 May 2013 (UTC)

According to Matt Mullenweg, the founder of WordPress and a competitor, Tumblr users were moving their posts over to WordPress at a rate of 72,000 an hour amid speculation of an impending deal this weekend. (Usually, he said, Tumblr users migrated 400 to 600 posts an hour). Still, for perspective, Tumblr users generate tens of millions of posts a day.link New worl (talk) 10:34, 21 May 2013 (UTC)

I don't think there's anything else to worry about. I read that Yahoo will keep Tumblr as it is, and allow it to still be the same independent company with David Karp still as the CEO. --Matt723star (talk) 19:58, 22 May 2013 (UTC)

Bad statistics, no source

This statement: "It has been noted that Tumblr is popular with the female demographic, with 53.5% of visitors being female as of 2011. 17% of Tumblr users are Hispanic, compared to 9% of US internet users who are Hispanic. 10% are African American, which is slightly higher than on the internet in general."

Has no source, and seems to compare global Hispanic users percentage to American Hispanic users percentage, which is a statistical fallacy.
