Papin invented the steam engine, not Newcomen:
Taken from The New Federalist, and The American Almanac. There are numerous sources all over the web too. If you compare Papin´s inventions you will find them quite superior to Newcomen´s. The fact that Papin subjected his inventions to the scrutiny of the Royal Society and that the records for this exist prove that the English government was aware of them. In those days steam power was considered a matter of "national security" also for its possible use in ships. Newton´s pathological dislike of Leibniz is well documented.
