The article could use a more basic introduction. I read the article, but I still have no idea what a Thermowell is. I gather that it's something that is installed in a piping system to protect sensors against extreme temperature. Is it some sort of pipe itself, or some type of liquid? To the previous comment, they are actually used. I was looking at products when I came across this article. There is a factual problem though: increased mass slows response time, it does not improve it. This is obvious because the process fluid has to heat the mass up along with the sensor. The best response time would occur with a well having low mass and lots of surface area exposed to the process flow.
