Which Cambridge? edit

I'm not sure, but it seems likely to me that the speech was given in Cambridge, MA, not in Cambridge, UK -- this is suggested by the contents of the speech (it would be somewhat controversial in the UK), the circumstance that it was given to the Phi Beta Kappa Society (which is an American society), and the fact that Emerson himself lived in Massachusetts at the time.
