Support of Paul Johnson
I don't feel that the quote from Paul Johnson concerning the NAACP is appropriate in this article. Specifically, I don't think it shows anything about the views of the actual subject of this article, as there is no evidence Cochran supported the opinion of Johnson. Instead, the quote is unrelated information intended to besmirch the reputation of Thad Cochran.
I'm specifically concerned that people will misread the quote as originating from Cochran, not Johnston, because of the subtle transition of the grammatical subject from Cochran to Johnson.
This entry has recently attracted attention (notably, on the main page of Conservapedia) due to its out-of-place mention of Johnson's racism. However, instead of entering the current edit war, I would simply like to voice my strong objections to the current content.
If there are other positions on this, notably if anyone wants the quote to remain, please discuss it here... --MatthewLiberal 19:10, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
- I only re-inserted it to piss off Conservapedia. I made their main page, so I'm satisfied. I don't think it belongs there... just like Trent Lott isn't necessarily a racist bigot for endorsing Strom Thurmond. However, I think the link to Johnson's entry should be there, so, in the words of MisterRational, "folks can decide for themselves." 72.204.142.42 seems to disagree... omg ShiftPlusOne 20:44, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
- I reinserted the quote once with proper citation, since this was the request in the history. I do believe that if Senator Cochran is going to cite his work with segregationists in his official Senate biography, his association is notable enough for wikipedia. While I'm sure conservapedia would claim his advocacy for Johnson was a "youthful indiscretion", it is one he notes in his biography as a positive and immediate precedes mention of his work for other segregationist candidates, including one of Johnson's opponents, Charles Sullivan (in 1971)[1][2], and one of Johnson's closer allies in Brad Dye [3].
- I think the current compromise works well. If someone wishes to read the article and still believe that segregation isn't racist, they can. And if someone wishes to read it and put two-and-two together a different way... that works as well. omg ShiftPlusOne 01:34, 7 June 2007 (UTC)
- "In 1995 the Senate adopted Senate Resolution 161 (104th Congress, 1st session) introduced by Mississippi Senator Thad Cochran. The resolution specified that the desk once used by Senator Jefferson Davis in the Senate Chamber would henceforth be assigned to the senior senator from Mississippi." Why would anyone wan't to sit in the chair used by the old racist President of the Confederate States of America?--The Illusional Ministry (talk) 01:58, 15 December 2009 (UTC)
I deleted the little blurb about pork-barrel spending; as a percentage of GDP Legislative pork does not top 5% which, while wasteful, has nothing on Executive Branch pork and entitlement spending.

Recent move
Why would this page get moved from Thad Cochran, the name he commonly goes by? If there's no justification, I'll move it back. --Coemgenus 11:28, 7 June 2011 (UTC)
According to Cochran's website, he is now the Chairman of the Agriculture Committee and not Appropriations. http://www.cochran.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/2013/1/cochran-selected-ranking-member-on-senate-agriculutre-committee — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:30B:8249:36B9:EDCC:B690:8BC5:C8EA (talk) 04:10, 1 February 2013 (UTC)
Context for political climate and elections
Have added material related to political situation in MS before and after Cochran became a Republican. Will add more cites, but these facts come from major sourced articles in WP - the shift of white conservatives from Democrats to Republicans in the South is well documented by RS.Parkwells (talk) 20:32, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
- Greetings, per WP:reliable sources, content in Wikipedia must be sourced. ThanksCFredkin (talk) 22:23, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
- As I noted above, I am aware of the RS requirement and have linked material to major articles from which I will draw sources. Also, sentences in the Lead do not have to have cites when that material, such as Cochran's being elected by a plurality in 1978, is supported by RS in the body of the article. But I can replace it with a source- it is interesting because it shows shifting politics in the state at the time of his first being elected to the Senate.Parkwells (talk) 22:52, 9 March 2014 (UTC)
China and office manager
The indictment of a trusted employee and office manager of the Senator has greater political import at the beginning of the Presidential election cycle as the anti-Beltway feeling is heightened nationally. The drug importation case of an employee who is very close to one of the most senior Senators might well have national security concerns since the exporter is America's top international adversary, China. During the late reelection campaign the Senator's age and judgment were debated.Church of the Rain (talk) 18:55, 7 June 2015 (UTC)Church of the Rain (talk) 19:28, 7 June 2015 (UTC)

Health section
Checking the consensus for whether we should add some section fr sub-section for his health (perhaps under "Tenure"?) It's been making the news for some time and may have lasting political consequences. There's also been a decent amount of news coverage. Thoughts? PvOberstein (talk) 04:52, 19 October 2017 (UTC)
- I agree, rumors about his bad health and possible resignation in 2018 are increasing. On 21 Dcember 2017 Politico even has a new piece about it: https://www.politico.com/story/2017/12/21/mississippi-senate-thad-cochran-future-in-doubt-308157 So methinks the time has come to put a new subsection with regard to his health in it. -- fdewaele, 22 December 2017, 10:12 CET.
As a Wikipedia reader I was pretty surprised there was no health section here, and I think it is warranted. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.55.233.92 (talk) 23:07, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

Resignation
Should we add speculation about his potential resignation?
