Swansea is basically the southern end of Newcastle. Government buses run from Newcastle station and terminate at Swansea Heads and Swansea Caravan Park. Once known as Pelican Flats and as 'Galgabba' by the local Aborigines, the area is expanding quickly and now has a rising population, mainly from Sydney. Expansions of Caves Beach and surrounding villages is now being added to by a new suburb - Wallarah Peninsula - which will see housing both on the lake and on the ocean, south of Swansea and Caves Beach.
