This page indicates that a survey township is "exactly 640 acres". On a flat surface, this would be correct, but Earth's surface is a sphere. This causes minor adjustments to be necessary, particularly when the "principal meridians" which are used as baselines converge as one travels in a northerly direction. There should be a footnote or parenthetical reference to this fact. Sorry, but I'm not familiar enough with this situation to accurately describe how it happens, I just know it does happen. 76.103.24.196 (talk) 19:29, 31 July 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

According to Public Land Survey System#Survey design, 25 of the 36 "sections" making up a "survey township" are guaranteed to be exactly 640 acres (to within the accuracy of the surveying), while the ones on the north and west edges may not be. --Carnildo (talk) 00:10, 1 August 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
