Strike tones - harmonics vs overtones

I think we need to be careful of terminology here. "Harmonics" are defined as integer multiples of the fundamental tone (see elsewhere in Wikipedia!). What I think you are describing is "overtones". Overtones are modes of resonance, where the standing waves are constructive rather than destructive. As I understand it, "partial" and "overtone" are synonyms. "Non-harmonic partials" can be constructive as well as destructive, and the non-harmonic overtones of bells are a big feature of the sound of a bell

Also, the "fundamental" is the lowest mode of resonance for an object and doesn't need to be the loudest sound. So talking about "sub-harmonics" and "sub-fundamental" doesn't make sense and should be reworded Charlesgaskell (talk) 20:48, 6 May 2023 (UTC)

You are correct. As of now, the term “harmonic” is used 13 times; more than half of these uses are wrong. However, I'm not sure if we should introduce "overtones" (which is not used yet) instead of the already existing “partials”. Any advice? ◅ Sebastian Helm 🗨 09:24, 28 March 2024 (UTC)
