The first paragraph is grammatically atrocious. Fragmented sentences galore. If I get a chance I will fix it but anyone else who has the desire - feel free. Wikimike 17:47, 20 November 2005 (UTC)Mike

The fourth paragraph doesnt give any real information about the band itself, its more of a gossip column thingy, so im deleting that paragraph out.

Citation

It would help if for the genre section, citation was used, there would then be no need for the discussion below. Asics 13:48, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Country?

Any info on why whoever wrote their myspace review calls them a 'country' band? they're about as country as they are death metal. Sojourner001 11:15, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

story of the year's genre

ok, whichever loser put that they are metal/alternative/punk rock should know that they have nothing in common with any of these genres. story of the year is punk pop, as they have more in common with good charlotte than say, mudvayne. and BTW, it has nothing in common with breaking benjamin either, so don't put alternative metal.

Mudvayne is nu-metal/post-grunge/alt-metal whatever, so SOTY obviously doesn't sound like them. In what way do they sound like Good Charlotte on ITWOD? They're almost an even mix between metalcore and pop-punk, but their music is still too far from both of those genres to be put up. They're not emo, either, so don't put that up.Theunknown42 00:28, 31 August 2006 (UTC)

i think they do sound like GC. the immature lyrics and simplistic music just scream good charlotte.

i fail to see what thse guys have to do with "emo"... can someone explain this to me? Likelightoflies05:38, 02 September 2006 (UTC)

they arent emo. emo would be like dashboard confessional and taking back sunday. story of they year is too brash to be emo, but not brash enough to be truly punk or metal.

What SOTY could conceivably be called:

  • Emo
  • Hard Rock
  • Punk
  • Punk Rock
  • Pop-Punk
  • Post-hardcore
  • Alternative rock

What SOTY are definitely not:

  • Metal
  • Metalcore
  • Country

Given that we can't agree, I think we should lump them into 'alternative rock' for now, as it's general enough to accomodate a lot of things. Sojourner001 18:38, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

they are emo & pop-punk with metal riffs. Maybe post-hardcore. But not punk or hardcore. i dont know exacty what melodic hardcore is, but, if rise against are melodic hardcore, Story of the year are NOT. pitoresco 19:26, 23 November 2006 (UTC)

an excelent source is allmusic. i believe in this site at 80%! (generally) (sorry for my english)

they list SOTY under emo, punk revival (for me, this is pop-punk, in most cases), screamo and post-grunge. pitoresco 13:58, 24 November 2006 (UTC)

some idiot keeps changing the genre to metal. ban that ugly fucker.222.153.115.227 10:02, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

I have added a genre change warning in a way to stop the users from changing it. Alex 21:08, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

Do you think we can list SOTY as Punk Metal/Crossover Thrash. Sum 41's album 'Chuck' which in my opinion is quite similar to 'In The Wake Of Determination' is listed as Punk Metal. What do you think? Jason f90 11:07, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

I would personally label them as post-hardcore. They are very similar to Saosin. They also have solos and often complex riffs, and quite complex drumming too. Possibly alternative rock too. Foodtastenice 10:45, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

Post-hardcore fits them the best because they're not traditional hardcore but contain elements of it and stuff. Theyre not really punk either, thats like ramones, clash etc. and theyre definitely not heavy metal. So I'm removing punk and hardcore and adding post-hardcore. 72.186.139.112 22:22, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

In my opinion, as i think i have the right to decide - being a loyal fan and a supporter of "i cudn't care less about what genre they are" - they are a mix of the following:(in no particular order)

  • punk-pop(theme)
  • post-hardcore(generally)
  • alternative rock/punk
  • emo/screamo(light)
  • metalcore(riffs)

Also if i may add, chuck (sum 41) and fake sound of progress (lost prophets) are reltaively close comparisons. thankyou for taking no notice of my bulls**t xxx 21:05, 10 January 2007(GMT)

Story of the Year are definitely not punk. Punk bands are Social Distortion, Rancid, Bad Religion, The Clash, The Ramones, etc. You can see that this band's music has many punk influences, such as the single Take Me Back, but bands like this are not punk. Whoever keeps on saying that they are not metal, you do not know what you're talking about. The band's sound is metal in every way, from the guitar riffs to the melodic/hardcore lyrics. However, I am not saying this band is without alternative influences, for it is very obvious, but that is why they are classified as Alt Metal. Also, Story of the Year are friends with Pop-Punk group Good Charlotte, but that does not make them Pop-Punk also. Avenged Sevenfold are also friends with GC, and they are far from Pop-Punk. Furthermore, SOTY is friendly with Alt Metal groups such as Alien Ant Farm and Linkin Park. Last thing: THEY ARE NOT EMO! Emo means emotional, and Story of the Year are not music that you would cry or cut your wrists if you listened to them.

Above dude: I consider myself well-informed on metal; just look at my help towards WiiProject Metal and WikiProject Guitarists, and I consider SOTY post-hardcore. Now, post-hardcore is pretty puch punk with metal riffs. Think MCR or The Used. Metal influenced; but not metal. End metal labelling. The Wiki Priest 05:22, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

they say that on In the Wake of Ditermination they where listining to allot of metal and incorperating it in the songs!!!!!

Screamo or Alternative Metal

I do not believe that SOTY can be called Punk or even rock, fair enough they are not full on metal, but have many characteristics of metal. For example they scream, which isn't done in rock, and at their concerts there are mosh pits... I would say that they are screamo, that's what they are on my iPod! Maiden are called Meal yet they are no where near as heavy!

I am going to link this page to the genre area as a disputes, I hope this meets with everyone's approval Asics 15:09, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

Genre

Eesh, I hate having to go through all this again. Page Avenue can't be a basis on their genre. And NO, UNTIL THE DAY I DIE isn't about a relationship. Dan specifically stated that it's about life on the road. In the Wake of Determination is definitely metalcore in my view, hell even metal. Listen to the whole album, songs like Meathead or "Is This My Fate," He Asked Them. They have complicated riff structures, and they actually have SOLOS. SOTY is not emotional; never was, so blame it on John Feldman, the producer for Page Avenue. So stick with Alternative or (I think) Metalcore. --Mynabull 01:22, 10 October 2006 (UTC)

Genre, redux

Would you anonymous editors please pick a genre and stick with it? Chubbles1212 04:34, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Heavy Metal?

I'm not sure who the hell is changing their genre to Heavy Metal but that is seriously the dumbest thing I've heard. Sure the album 'In The Wake Of Determination' has metallish riffs but that's the closest they get to being metal. May some metalhead beat the s*** out of whoever is changing their genre to heavy metal. 219.89.245.170 10:34, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

ok

ok, so story of the year isnt really full on metal, but they got pretty metal in the new album, like mynabull said, do not base their genre on page avenue because like the dvd said, john feldman didnt let them get very metal. Ok, so were not calling them emo, but please do not call them pop punk or emo, they dont wear clothing like fall out boy and good charlotte (thank god) or those other pop emo bands. so can we try calling them punk rock/metalcore? User:Anonymous lam|Anonymous lam]] 03:20, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

  • I'm fine with the designations as they are now (punk rock, alternative rock); emocore, emo-punk, and post-hardcore all work for me, too, as long as it doesn't change every 20 minutes. Here's a review where they call them pop-metal: [1] And ultimately, it has nothing to do with the clothes they wear, but on the music. And SOTY are, I'd say, fairly far from Good Charlotte, but not as far from Fall Out Boy...I'd say they'd fall close to Matchbook Romance and Funeral for a Friend; maybe we should use the same genre designations given to those bands. Chubbles 03:55, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
  • fine with me, but to me they sound so much more agressive than those bands..and i love that review from the link you gave us, thats exactly how i feel about them

  • Their myspace states they are Rock/Metal/Hardcore and as i said previously they are much more metal than other bands... Their design of website and myspace is more of a metal look than anything else du to the mass of black. Asics 15:16, 22 December 2006 (UTC)

yo

They are definitely NOT:
- emo
- punk
- pop-punk
- alt. rock
- post-hardcore
- alt. metal
- heavy metal.

Their songz contain elements of:
- rock
- metal
- hardcore, just as stated on their myspace. And, hell damn it, it wuz done by THEM!
So; it's
- too hard to be rock
- not hard enough to be metal
- too metal to be hardcore
- too rock to be metalcore.
F*ck, not an easy thing XD It's "metallic melodic hardcore" :P. Like Rise Against with a metallic sound insteada' the punkish one they have...maybe. Or not.

How about melodic metalcore?220.235.150.86 04:40, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

i think their: alternative, kinda metal, punk, harcore, hard rock, and i think the genres on their myspace is correct, they WERE the ones who put those genres there67.180.40.98 03:29, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

I agree, if we can't decide on a genre let's have what they say they are on their myspace Asics 14:19, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

SOTY ARE NOT EMO! NEITHER ARE MCR OR ANY OTHER BANDS LIKE THESE. EMO DIED OUT IN THE 80's SO FUCK OFF WITH IT!

SOTY are not; hardcore metalcore emo punk metal blues screamo heavy metal anything else you can think of

SOTY are Rock and could possibly be considered post-hardcore. Ask the band yourselves.

Can we please just get it sorted out?

they call themselves a rock band, so i guess we should call them that now, mind if i change the genre?67.180.40.98 15:52, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

  • I mind. I'll revert any genre citation that isn't sourced. This is really quite silly...this talk page is full of angry, anonymous proclamations about what SOTY is and is not, and most of them are made by editors who use questionable grammar. I, personally, have no problem calling them any of the standard bugbears - Emocore, post-hardcore, metal, screamo, melodic hardcore - or whatever; they fit into all of these categories, and it seems like a lot of this fighting is going on between various high-schoolers who want to be able to like the band without being called effeminate by their friends. If you cite a reliable source, your genre stays. Chubbles 17:25, 8 January 2007 (UTC)

first off-you cant define music by the clothes the band use! second - emo is a genre, not an insult.

i think they´re post-hardcore, emo / screamo, alternative and pop punk

allmusic says that they´re emo, pop punk and alternative metal:

Story of the Years Genre Best Described

I fail to see how this band is country and metal. Metal is heavy with complex riffs. Country has a distinct sound that anyone can find easily. I personally hearing a few of their songs conclude that they are mix of Punk Rock (a little Hardcore), Post-Hardcore, and Emo. The reason I say emo is one time I was on Yahoo! Music and I watch one of their old videos which was a very slow acoustic-driven song which was VERY emotional. For the most part these guys have a punk rock sound and that is simply what it should be too. These guys sound very similar to Stretch Arm Strong.

  • Your designations are uncited. I've reverted them. Chubbles 20:25, 9 January 2007 (UTC)
  • They are partly like Stretch Arm Strong, who actually supportes SOTY on their tour last year, although different songs have different influences, such as 'Is This my Fate?' is more metal than the light rock 'until the day i die' and so on. AsicsTalk 21:37, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Parallel To Yellowcard?

Story of the Year's vocals sound a lot like Yellowcard when they don't scream. And doesn't the album "Page Avenue" make you think of Yellowcard having an album "Ocean Avenue" at around the same time?

I am blind but I can see

Argh! Who the hell are the jerks that keeps saying that this crap is metal, hardcore or whatever??? SOTY sure aren't whatever of these above.

THEY AREN'T EMOS too, just look at the style... nobody is wearing black and red all the time and they don't cry when they sing... -_- I believe that SOTY is pop-punk. It is very similir to other pop-punk bands like simple plan, good charlotte and yellowcard. Let's just stop fighting over this thing and put rock, maybe post-punk and pop-punk or even melodic hardcore...

...not that my opinion would change your freaking conservative minds who insist that they are metal or punk or emo or jazz or rapcore or R&B or whatever.

Jeez... They call themselves a 'rock' band because they know that being labeled as 'emos','melodic whatever', and 'pop' isn't safe for health.

          -Good Call

ok, since when do you see emo bands crying on stage, your just a stereotype, so why should people listen to you? how are they a pop punk band? have you even heard their new album? it doesnt come close to pop, except for "wake up the voiceless" but all the other songs are more punk/metal/hardcore. just call them hard rock please.Anonymousslam 04:49, 26 January 2007 (UTC)

THEY ARE POP PUNK AND YEAH WTF IS UP WITH CALLING 'EM EMO They AREN'T EMOs
