Discussion edit

(moved from our Talk pages)

See User:GuillaumeTell/Boulderbox (done in rather a hurry and now moved here after alterations and corrections). I just took a random chunk of the discography. You can sort the columns up or down by clicking the arrows at the top of each. Not sure that the Conductor column will be required - or will it? Also Weston and Lee - did one write the music and the other wrote the words? Or did they both do both? Anyway, comments welcome, here or on my Talk page. --GuillaumeTell 23:16, 15 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I really like it! I don't think it needs a conductor section as most of the monologues were spoken word. Weston and Lee composed together and it was never specified as to who done what so I think we should keep them as one. I think the sections needed are;
  • Year first recorded
  • song title
  • written by
  • Year recorded by Holloway
  • Notes (ie taken from The Co-Ops etc or separate Show section leaving Notes for any other info)

I can't think of any other sections unless you can but so far it looks very encouraging -- Cassianto (talk) 23:50, 15 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for this. I've removed the Conductor column and made some corrections. Questions and comments:
  • What's the difference between "Year first recorded" and "Year recorded by Holloway"? Or maybe "how easy is it to discover the year first recorded"?
  • Written by" is fine, but musical numbers have composers who need to be credited.
  • Need to distinguish monologues from songs
  • In fact, maybe there should be separate tables for each?
I'll be going out for the evening in an hour or so, but will have some time to do some more late tonight and over the weekend (after which I'll be away on Monday and most of Tuesday). Should I move the draft table as is (and perhaps this discussion as well?) to the discography's Talk page? Oh, and one other thing: given that "Sam's medal" is a monologue (I assume), should Michael Hogan be listed in the box with Mabel C rather than in the composer column. --GuillaumeTell 18:03, 16 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes let's take this to the discussion page I think, purely to save on the talk page tennis we got going on at the moment :--D I will look up "Sam's Medal" in the next few days. Once the table is established I can start to add things missing and elaborate on info there. I'm afraid I'm no good at the technical stuff re table formatting etc so I may have to leave that to you but I will be happy to research and add info into the boxes etc. I'll see you on the discussion pages in the next few days. All the best! -- Cassianto (talk) 19:38, 16 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

To answer your points raised earlier

  • Some of Holloway's later recording's were previously recorded in the the late 1800s early 1900s. Its not obligatory that this has a column of its own; this could be mentioned in "Notes". Most of the song/monologue titles did have years of origin attached to them which I found.
  • This will be difficult to find as, invariably writer and composer amounts to the same thing according to sources found so far and neither one nor the other are specified when determining who done what.
  • I agree maybe a small section denoting "M" for monologue and "S" for song. Or maybe two columns stating "Monologue" and "Song" with a tick in which ever one is best described.

By the way, will we be conducting edits in the above boulderbox link? -- Cassianto (talk) 16:50, 18 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I've been busy today and will be away for most of Monday and Tuesday. An updated table is now in my Boulderbox - probably about 2/3 of the current discography table - feel free to make alterations there. Re your comments above, it's not at all clear to me that "writer and composer amounts to the same thing" - I've found several composers by google searches. Plus the number of songs (including duets) indicates that SH's recordings (as far as I've got) aren't all monologues by any means. In haste! --GuillaumeTell 01:37, 19 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
Just a note to say that I've added another tranche of monologues/songs to the Boulderbox table and I've now checked each column to ensure that all entries are in alphabetical order. It's rather fiddly but not too difficult. The footnotes in the current page need duplicating in the Boulderbox and I'll probably deal with those tomorrow before carrying on adding more rows. Once it's all there, we can discuss extra song/monologue columns, etc., and may also need to change the widths of some columns (I'll have to find out how to do that, but I have a guru up my sleeve!) --GuillaumeTell 22:33, 23 December 2011 (UTC)Reply
