I dispute the recommended merge. I have no opinion on merging South-west Corner of Western Australia (which appears to be about a catchment) into Southwest Australia, which is obvious defined in terms of biodiversity criteria. However the South West region of Western Australia is about a region defined by the government under the Regional Development Act. Neither its geographical boundaries nor its purpose coincide with Southwest Australia, and the articles must not be merged. One might just as well suggest merging Swan Shire into Swan River. interzone + nomenclature

edit

Needs referencing from Hopper on historical 'interzone' - not at hand to expand Yalgoo and Mallee references

+ I really do not like the WWF nomenclature - I have not seen any Savanna anywhere in the Southwest Australia savanna region, there are barely any native grasses at all! And how is that Swan Coastal Plain = Kwongan heathlands when it is mostly Banksia woodlands, and 'Kwongan shrubland' occurs in at least 3 or 4 other IBRA / ecoregions. And it is odd that 'Jarrah' refers to different regions in the IBRA v WWF systems

AusEng style = South West [not "Southwest"]

edit

This is one of the cases where Australian English style (as per the Macquarie and Oxford Australian Dictionaries) usually differs from both US and UK style.

That is, the joining together of cardinal directions (e.g. southwest/southwestern) is very much a North American thing, whereas formal UK style is more often hyphenated (south-west, south-western).

Australian English is distinguished by an aversion to hyphenation (except in proper nouns) and rendering non-cardinal directions as separate words (e.g. "South West").

While I take the point that some of the sources cited use "Southwest", "South-western" in titles etc., that lack of uniformity is an even bigger pointer that the name should default to the conventional.

Thoughts?
