I think I saw one of these once - a mate of mine from New Zealand had one. It looked like a prop from a low budget Frankenstein movie so I asked him to demonstrate. He stuck the pins into a 13 amp outlet, ostensibly to show me what the movement would do. I was out of luck; it drew so much current, it tripped a breaker and thus shut down all the computers in the control room. I never did see it working as it stayed in his toolbox permenantly after that.
I'm guessing it was supposed to do the same sort of thing as the IQ tester in 'The Forbidden Planet' - it looked like it came from that era in any event.
- By virtue of it's solenoid mechanism (vs. say, far-more-delicate moving-coil meters), a Wiggy is supposed to be a "bullet proof" voltmeter for quick and rough checks that a worker can bang around in his toolbox for years and not worry about damage. If there was a short in the one your friend used, well, anything can go bad, but that does not condemn the basic concept. Strange Edit buttons edit
Next to the headings (as on this talk page), there appear Edit buttons. However, the font of those appearing on the Solenoid voltmeter page is larger than typical and are not enclosed in square brackets. Since they do not appear in the markup, I assume that there is some place that governs the appearance of these buttons, but I have no idea where that is.
