Start ranks edit

185.46.214.60 "corrected" the start ranks with this edit. Wile I appreciate the sentiment there is no error on our part. I fully understand why the editor did this—the start ranks do not match up to the end ranks for last season and there have been no tournaments inbetween. You can confirm the start ranks in the first column at http://www.worldsnooker.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/World-Rankings-after-Riga-Masters-2017-after-appeals-committee.pdf; you will see that Barry Hawkins's start rank is indeed #6 despite the fact he finished the 2016/17 season at #5. There are anomalies all through the list, such as Ryan Day who has a start rank of #19 despite finishing last season at #18.

This did not make sense to me first either but I figured out why it happened. World Snooker seems to have deducted the 2015 Riga Masters points prior to re-ranking the players. If you look at the 2017/18 ranking list before the 2017 Riga points are added and sort the cut-off 1 column you will sure enough see that Barry Hawkings swaps places with Marco Fu and Ryan Day with David Gilbert. Now I appreciate this is different to how the ranking system usually works: the old points come off when the new points go on, but what World Snooker seem to have done is take off the old points, re-rank, and then added the new points. I don't know the rationale behind this i.e. is this a new way of updating the ranking system or have they just made a mistake, but this is basically what has happened.

In my opinion the are making a complicated system even more confusing by doing this, but ultimately it is up to World Snooker how they update their rankings and our table should reflect what the official ranking list says. Betty Logan (talk) 18:34, 29 June 2017 (UTC)Reply
