Why is it important to note that the inventors are gay? Their sexuality has nothing to do with this subject or with their identities as inventors. The author may have written that they are gay to show that gay people contribute innovations to society, but in fact it does the opposite. It creates the impression that it is unusual and important that the inventors are gay, and reinforces the widely held underlying belief that gays are defined as people solely by their sexuality.

Has anyone ever seen a reference to "the gay artist Michelangelo?"
