"Sirenoidea" or not?

edit

From what I've been able to find, the most recent and robust phylogeny is Pyron & Wiens, 2011. It places Sirenidae as sister to the clade that is usually classified as Salamandroidea, but does not recognize either a superfamily Sirenoidea or Salamandroidea, so it is unclear what their suggested higher classification actually is. The older classifications that do recognize Sirenoidea as a clade also place this clade as sister to all other salamanders, which is incongruent with Pyron & Wiens' phylogeny. The WP article on salamanders shows the Pyron & Wiens cladogram, but uses the superfamily names (which they do not), and I'm not certain whether or not this is appropriate. For now, the higher clade that Sirenidae links to is Salamandroidea, but it could also be Sirenoidea, if that is recognized as a valid clade. Dyanega (talk) 17:07, 6 December 2018 (UTC)Reply
