Answering my own question in my edit summary in the article, these authors have written various articles on the origins of horse-back writing, some published in Antiquity Magazine. See [1] with some discussion by Peter S Bellwood in his book First Farmers [2]. Clearly not 'confined to a limited number of scholars' though, as Bellwood says 'scholars too numerous to mention'.
