Opening comment edit

stadium seating has several meanings, only one of which is synonymous with festival seating

recommend the articles not be merged

  • Agree, altho I think that stadium seating should be amended to make only a brief reference this this meaning ("Stadium seating is also another term for festival seating.) --Tysto 22:46, 2005 August 13 (UTC)
  • Agree, redirect to stadium seating, add refrence to Cincinnati disaster.
  • General seating has since redirected here and stadium seating discusses the alternate meaning, so I will remove the months-old "merge" tag. HollyAm 04:56, 2 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Move suggestion edit

I would like to move this article to Event seating or audience seating. I believe that 'seating' is not necessarily descriptive of this article, and people could be looking up other things when looking up seating (such as restaurant seatings, for example). Either way, "seating" doesn't really clearly define this article. TheHYPO (talk) 01:16, 13 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

SeatingFestival seating — - per WP:Articles for deletion/Seating. Tim Song (talk) 00:20, 26 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

  • I'm paraphrasing what I said in the deletion discussion. The original version of this article describes a mode of seating called "Festival seating" which may or may not be a verifiable term of art with reliable sources. The basis for this is a single Cincinnati newspaper article describing a tragedy in at a 1979 concert and the city's reassessment in 2004. If "Festival seating" is an actual term then this article, pared down, is a good starting place. Note that most of the incoming links have nothing to do with the article; seating is a generic enough term to be caught up in random wiki-linking. This article was at Festival seating, and concerned solely with that topic, until it was generalized for some reason in 2007. This strikes me as a step backwards; taking a reasonable if undersourced article on a discrete concept and using it as the basis for an unimaginably broad article. The content should move back to Festival seating and revert back to its original form. No opinion on the possibility of a generic "seating" article but there's a article to be written on the narrower subject. Mackensen (talk) 00:31, 26 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Well, if you look right about your comment, you'll see that I proposed this move a while ago (though I guess I never followed through on it). I disagree with your point tha this article being genealized is a bad turn. I do believe that festival seating should be described but I think it is fair to have an article that describes/lists types of seating for events (there must be hundreds if not thousands of seated ticketed events going on every day, and MOST will use a variation on either a) assigned seating or b) general admission [into which I personaly include festival seating]. It is fair to describe these two (either in linking to subarticles, or describing both in two sections of one article).
Where I do agree, as stated above, I believe strongly that "seating" is a poor title and as you indicate, could end up randomlinked by a dozen or more topics that have nothing to do with event seating. I suggest one of seating assignment, event seating, audience seating, concert seating, etc. Perhaps bias slightly towards the first of those options. TheHYPO (talk) 20:23, 26 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Comment. I agree that the page should be moved; however, the ideal target is the name used in reliable sources for the general concept. A brief Google search on the various terms proposed by TheHYPO seems to suggest that "seating assignment" is probably the best - "event seating" and "audience seating" hits are mainly for firms that provide the actual chairs, and "concert seating" is (understandably) about seating for _concerts_, not "events" in general. That's assuming, of course, this article is to remain about the general concept, which would be my interpretation of the AfD result. Tevildo (talk) 21:29, 26 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
