War Memorial photograph

see [1] This Australian War Memorial photograph, was taken at sea, on 10 December 1914, en route to Egypt, immediately following Nimmo's graduation at Duntroon in October 1914.] Nimmo is dead centre, sitting on the ground (N.B. His fellow cadet/graduate Malcolm Stuart Kennedy is one row behind Nimmo, at the far right (Nimmo's far left). The War Memorial record record is mistaken; he was not a major at that time.Lindsay658 (talk) 03:06, 21 August 2012 (UTC)

Investiture photograph

The investiture photograph, under Post-war service, does not appear to be of Robert Nimmo. The title description of the photograph at the NAA identifies the individual seated second from right as "Major J.R. Nimmo, OBE". The rank, initials and grade of award could be typographical errors, except the seated individual is wearing an OBE (as opposed to Robert Nimmo's CBE, which is worn around the neck). The AWM's awards database confirms a Major John Robertson Nimmo was appointed an OBE in 1952. Although the NAA dates the photograph as 1951, the AWM's awards database also confirms that the airman standing second from left was invested with his DFC by the Governor-General on 20 May 1952. So it looks like the photograph depicts Major John and not Major General Robert. Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 01:55, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

Whoops, my mistake! Deleted and image file changed. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 07:33, 16 September 2022 (UTC)
No worries, and thanks. :) Cheers, Abraham, B.S. (talk) 08:15, 16 September 2022 (UTC)

Children

Should the names of Robert's Children be listed? If only to assist future researchers? Trust me it took four days of scouring the Australian Newspaper archive for these: His children to his first wife are Pilot Officer James Andrew Harold Nimmo (1921-1944) [1] and Anne Lethbridge Nimmo (1924-2005) [2], and his children to his second wife are Robert Nimmo (1947-????) and Catherine Nimmo (1945-????) [3][4] [5] I'm still looking for more concrete histories for the fates of Robert and Catherine but wanted to shareDocWinters (talk) 02:07, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for raising this. Generally the names of children are included if they are notable or mentioned in reliable secondary sources (which is the case with James). wikitree and ancestry aren't reliable, unfortunately. Newspapers on Trove could be used, but probably only if the names of all of the children could be sourced from Trove (and preferably their dates of birth as well). Some random comments

Looking at the page from the WikiProject I was thinking the following might be worth considering:

  • Adding the personal information, i.e. married twice, number of children, etc. to the infobox.
Sure, done. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:04, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
  • I would be happier if there was a couple more in line citations in the second paragraph of the Gallipoli campaign section even if it is the same as the one at the end of paragraph.
OK, done. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:04, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
  • Given his record I would be surprised if there wasn't some sort of award or recognition of him. Is t Did he leave any papers to a research institution? Gusfriend (talk) 23:52, 14 October 2022 (UTC)
Not as far as I have been able to find. I will do another check prior to the FAC nom. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:04, 15 October 2022 (UTC)
Have conducted a more thorough search. His brother John is remembered via Nimmo House at Duntroon, but AFAIK, Robert's name doesn't grace any awards anywhere. Which seems a strange situation given his prominence among Australian peacekeepers. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 08:15, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

Issue with his place of birth

Wasn't Nimmo born in the Colony of Queensland rather than Australia, as Australia was federated in 1901 and he was born in 1893? This change needs to be made/discussed about. If you respond, please tag me so I am notified. HoHo3143 (talk) 03:07, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

Tagging @Peacemaker67 as they have made a large amount of edits to the page HoHo3143 (talk) 03:09, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
Well spotted, fixed. Thanks, HoHo3143! Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 03:17, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
All good- somehow I spotted it very quickly! For accuracy in the infobox, should Queensland be changed to Colony of Queensland or should it just stay as Queensland? HoHo3143 (talk) 03:21, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
I don’t think it needs to be in full as long as it is piped to the right target. Cheers, Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 05:10, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
@Peacemaker67 makes sense. Congrats on the article...you've done a great job! HoHo3143 (talk) 05:27, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

Magnificent

Hi @Peacemaker67 - congratulations on this page. Had never heard of this prince of soldiers until yesterday. Kudos particularly for including the really personal material, whilst staying "encyclopaedic" as they say.

Was thinking, it would be great to have an image that supports the last period of Nimmo's career, in Pakistan. So I did look at the Crown copyright as discussed here. And then I wondered would it be good to have this shot hosted at AWM - its shadows so powerful. Seems to be well outside the crown copyright window of 50 years. Your thoughts?

MatthewDalhousie (talk) 04:07, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

Thanks Matthew. Unfortunately I think that photo is probably subject to AWM licence copyright, ie the donor still retains some copyright over it, or has transferred that right to the AWM. I don't think it qualifies for Crown copyright. I agree about having a photo from this period, I looked pretty hard prior to nominating it at FAC, and will keep looking. @Peacemaker67 Who is Robert Nimmo's family? Qondd2 (talk) 21:13, 5 January 2024 (UTC)
They are mentioned in the article? Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 01:05, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
@Peacemaker67 "certe", "they" are "mentioned" in the "article" Qondd2 (talk) 01:12, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
Sorry, you’ll have to spell out your query more clearly. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:10, 6 January 2024 (UTC)
Back to the photo and permissions @Peacemaker67 - I may have a contact within AWM who could help. To confirm, we'd like to support the article by using this shot: https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C1194105
And, for that to happen, we'd like "Lieutenant General Robert H Nimmo, Chief Military Observer (CMO), Australia with United Nations" released to one of the following licences:
CC BY 2.0
CC BY 3.0
CC BY 4.0
CC BY-SA 2.0
CC BY-SA 2.5
CC BY-SA 3.0
CC BY-SA 4.0
That the ask? MatthewDalhousie (talk) 00:13, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Yes, as I understand it. Peacemaker67 (click to talk to me) 02:26, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
Okay. I've been in touch with the Curator of Art at the AWM, then made formal request. Will take several weeks. Will update you in a few weeks.MatthewDalhousie (talk) 04:00, 8 January 2024 (UTC)
