I think Wikipedia:Naming conventions (common names) policy would dictate that this article should be at "Risley Hall", with redirects from elsewhere. Nohat 06:45, 13 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Not the only dorm with a dining hall

I removed this sentence from the article:

Until the construction of the Alice Cook House in 2004, the second residential college on campus, Risley featured the only in-dorm dining hall.

I was a Cornell undergrad from 1992 to 1996. Not sure what the current situation is, but when I was there Balch Hall also had a dining hall in it, as did Sage Hall (which wasa dorm before it was gutted and turned into the Management school in 1996). --Jfruh 04:20, 2 September 2005 (UTC)

I have no idea what this "Carol Tatkon" if which you speak is.  :) Basically, if I remember right (I almost never ate there, as I thought the food was terrible), you got to the dining hall as follows: Imagine you're walking from the center campus, and passing through the archway that leads you towards the other North Campus dorms (Dickson, Donlon, etc.). But instead of passing through the archway to the other side, you turn to the right. There's a door there in the archway wall. Pass through that door, and you're in the dining hall. The decor was very nice in a sort of Victorian way. The food was supposedly good if you like vegetarian food, which I don't. Jeez, don't tell me this is all lost in the mists of time, you'll make me feel old (I mean it wasn't even 10 years ago I was there ... right?). --Jfruh 23:00, 5 October 2005 (UTC)

I was never around when the Balch dining hall was operational, but based on the Tatkon center's proximity to the loading dock on the eastern side of the east wing, it seems quite likely that it's sitting where the cafeteria used to be. - 2 Mar. 2006

Apparently they closed Balch Dining in about 1999. I used to go there once or twice a year. It wasn't bad. But -- we always suspected one day they'd close it, or Risley. Glad to see that Risley Dining has survived. --Hiraeth 22:19, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

At the time that Risley became a residential college, there were very few dining options on North Campus other than dorms. There was the "Pancake House" in Noyes Lodge. In-dorm dining halls were in Risley, Balch (were the Tatkon center later went), and Dickson (in the center section, later converted into dorm rooms). The opening of the North Campus Union (later the Robert Purcell Union) started the shift toward more centralized dinning. Racepacket (talk) 07:51, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

According to the webpage, this Carol Takton Center is a facility for first-year students. http://www.newstudentprograms.cornell.edu/Tatkon/default.html. I was at Cornell between 1998 and 2001, and I can say that this Center wasn't around at that time. Neither, of course, were the newest batch of North Campus dorms. I can confirm eating in Balch Dining when I was at Cornell, and can confirm that there was a push to close both Risley Dining and Balch Dining at the time (see, for example, http://assembly.cornell.edu/SA/19990204Meeting). If memory serves, Balch Dining was in a different part of the building than Carol's Cafe. The website map (http://www.campuslife.cornell.edu/campuslife/dining/dininglocationmap.cfm#Carol's_Café) shows Carol's Cafe near the eastern corner of Balch on the courtyard side of the building; if I remember correctly, Balch Dining was in the southern corner, nearest to Beebe Lake, with windows facing outward. "Harry Potter" movies?

Can someone please provide a source citation to the comment that the "Harry Potter" movies were partly filmed in Risley Dining? While it does look like the movies might have been partly filmed there, I'm not sure I believe it. -- Tckma 02:26, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Looking through the history, nobody said it was filmed *in* RisDining. They stated it was filmed in the room that RisDining is based on. I think the passage should be reworded and put back. -- 24.235.71.134 22:48, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
