On the documentary 'Purple Rain: Backstage Pass' the filmmakers explain how this song was written specifically as a score to the motorcycle riding scene. How then could it have been planned for Apollonia's album? Anyone know?202.82.171.186 (talk) 05:13, 2 January 2008 (UTC)

preperatory research: Purple Rain

It should probably be noted that the name purple rain comes from a flavor of mad dog. I found this out on the disambiguation page for the character string, symbolic expression or list "purple rain". That would go nicely in the miscellania. Hope noone here thinks prince wouldn't make a song, movie and album with a flavor of md20/20 as its "inspiration". If you think that you don't know the Prince I think I know. He's pretty lowq down and dirty!

Purple Rain was the first Prince album recorded with and credited to his backing group the Revolution

This is not true at all. All Prince fans know that The Revolution were credited on the "1999" album. Simply take a look at the "1999" album cover and you will see "and The Revolution" right on the cover (spelled backwards). The Revolution were also already touring and playing with Prince from the "Dirty Mind" album onwards (Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, Around The World In A Day, and Parade". -- 96.224.247.76 03:20, 2 August 2007 (UTC)AR

Yes, it *IS* true. The words may have been part of the artwork on 1999 (and backwards at that) but it was NOT part of the official album credits. The fact that "The Revolution" were not specifically listed in any official album credits before Purple Rain really doesn't mean anything. A perfect example is the song "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" on The Beatles White Album. Just because Eric Clapton wasn't listed in the official album credits as playing the guitar solo on that song doesn't mean he didn't do it. There have been many instances where Prince didn't give album credits to people who either played instruments, added vocals, and even wrote part of songs. So, if you want Wiki to be "accurate" you can't, in this case, base all the criteria on "Album Credits". I mean, look at it another way, why would Prince have on the actual 1999 album cover "and The Revolution" if they didn't have any participation? Remaster/Reissue?

Wasn't this album set to be reissued in a long-awaited expanded and remastered edition last year? Prince's catalogue has been conspicuous by its absence from any re-release or remastering schemes for the last 25 years, almost unique for an artist and songwriter of his stature. The main reason for this is his feud with Warner of course, plus (less important?) that his own religious convictions might make him a bit less keen on reissuing his own most...adult records. Still, I read last year in several articles that añ expanded reissue was set for at least Purple Rain sometime in the autumn of '14, and likely continuing with some of his other eighties albums. 83.254.154.164 (talk) 23:30, 12 March 2015 (UTC)

Purple Rain Deluxe and Deluxe Expanded

I would like to expand the reissue section a bit further. I think it deserves to be on the same level as the 'early configurations' section and should not be listed under 'track listing' This is my suggestion:

The album was released as a Deluxe and Deluxe Expanded edition on June 23, 2017. The Deluxe edition consists of two discs, the first being a remaster of the original album made in 2015 overseen by Prince himself and a bonus disc of previously unreleased songs called "From the Vault & Previously Unreleased". The Deluxe Expanded edition consists of two more discs, a disc with all the single edits, maxi-single edits and b-sides from the Purple Rain era and a DVD with a concert from the Purple Rain Tour filmed in Syracuse, New York on March 30, 1985, previously released on home video in 1985.

@Djfunkfunk: Your changes have been partially reverted, because Drfunkenberry is not a more reliable source than Billboard. I don't think it's reliable at all. You also changed the correct link, Prince (musician), to Prince. Elsewhere you didn't change much beyond the heading. I don't think this was worth worrying about doing after half a year. Band performances

Which tracks actually had the full band performing as confirmed by official sources? Matt Fink says that The Revolution didn't have much to do with the song "Take Me with U" and implies that Prince recorded the whole song by himself except for Wendy and Lisa and Apollonia, but in the article and on www.princevault.com, it says that the song is a full band performance of The Revolution and Prince originally intended to have the song included on Apollonia 6's solitary album, only to include it on the "Purple Rain" soundtrack.
