Purlie

Purlie is one of the greatest black musicals that I have been privileged to see. I first saw it on Broadway starring Clevon Little as Purlie and Melba Moore as the leading lady Lutiebell, and then again on cable in the early 1980's, starring Robert Guillaume. Melba Moore who I refer to as the little lady with the big voice was brilliant! I was totally mesmerized by the entire performance and I have seen a lot of on and off Broadway shows that were magnificent and Purlie is at the top of the charts. I have read that the latter version was shown on PBS but I do not know when. Everyone I know is attempting to locate this artistic work on DVD or VHS. So far no one has managed to locate it on either. It is a shame that the public is deprived of witnessing the superb acting and artistic wizardtry of the broadway stage. For those of you who enjoy musicals but have not seen it do yourselves a favor if you ever get the opportunity and watch it . . . I grew up listening to the Purlie soundtrack. My entire family loves this play/musical soundtrack and we are caucasian. That shouldn't matter but in this day and age, unfortunately, there are social obstacles that set us apart. We were able to watch the 1981 version of the musical on PBS, which was terrific. We then saw it in Philadelphia at a small playhouse and I had to stop myself from singing too loud to every single song in the play! I know every word to every song. The play was amazing and everyone had a good time! I had been looking for the CD for years and almost kissed the guy who found it for me in one of those chain stores. I recognized it immediately because we had the 8-track growing up (green cover with silouettes)-I knew it immediately! I now have my friends listening to it. This music stands the test of time. Let's talk about the opening number- WOW WOW WOW! is all I can say. What other musical has you up dancing and singing within the first 3 minutes of its opening? You can't help but start dancing and singing! I wish this would come around again to the Philly area and play in a bigger, more known, venue- I would be there every night!
