Scope of article

Berbati and Prosymna are the same place (Prosymna is the ancient name; it was renamed Berbati in modern times, and re-renamed Prosymna relatively recently). Strictly speaking, Prosymna is one site within the Berbati Valley; there are other sites (Mastos and Pyrgouthi, for instance) which have been intensively studied in recent years. It's also somewhat confusing in that the Swedish archaeologists working there include the adjacent valleys, such as that of Limnes, when they talk about the "Berbati Valley".

The two articles certainly need a lot of sorting out - I don't think either has really got its head around precisely where everything is, but in fairness that's a very tricky question and not helped by how flexible archaeologists have been with terms and toponyms. However, they aren't the same thing and should, at least in the long run, be two separate articles: eventually, "Prosymna" should be a subsection of "Berbati Valley" with a hatnote out to the main article. It gets even worse. Prosymna, the ancient town, is somewhere around the Berbati Valley - we don't actually know where, only that it controlled the Argive Heraion, which is on the far west of the area (actually just on the wrong side of the watershed). The excavators gave the name "Prosymna" to the Bronze Age archaeological site around the Heraion, which is a good few miles away from the modern village that gives the valley its name. Suggest that this article should refer to the lost ancient city; the archaeological site could be "Prosymna (archaeological site)"?. UndercoverClassicist ^T·C 07:39, 8 September 2023 (UTC)
