You have got to be f**ing kidding me. Compact fluorescents are a very real and imminent threat to the environment because they contain mercury. Compact fluorescents use more energy in their manufacture than they save over their lifetime over an incandescent. Incandescents contain zero mercury. Compact fluorescents are made in China, while incandescents are still in most cases made in the USA or other first world countries where emissions regulations are much stricter, so the emissions involved in compact flourescent manufacture alone are an environmental disaster in the making, not to mention the extra fuel spent to transport them around the world, which would be a problem even if the mercury weren't considered. Everyone who is in any way involved with banning incandescent light bulbs deserves censure in the strongest possible terms. 96.239.129.92 (talk) 23:12, 20 January 2009 (UTC)

In order to address some of these issues, a levy or tax on incandescent light bulbs has been suggested as an alternative to an outright ban. This would make them more expensive than CFLs, but would make them available in applications where CFLs are unsuitable.

I have numbered the point above and would offer the following; 1 The Colour rendering Index of CFLs is about 80 with a very poor R9 Cite error: A <ref> tag is missing the closing </ref> (see the help page). The Lighting Industries Federation is a manufacturers' Trade Association. This document acknowledges low PF and harmonic generation and [1] [2] 19 Obvious by inspection. but see [3] For the others see: [4] [5] [6] [7]

This item was published in SLL Newsletter 6 Sept/October 2007 p9-10.

  A summary of the ILE Position Statement (the pdf referred to) appeared in Lighting Journal 73.2 April 2008 p5

SLL is the Society of Light and Lighting, part of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers and ILE is The Institute of Lighting Engineer, all professional institutions in the UK I should have said that these three references refer to a number of the issues in the list. You need to be aware that a source such as Spectrumalliance is not seen to be a reliable source on WP. (see Wikipedia:Reliable sources).

"Anyone can create a website or pay to have a book published, then claim to be an expert in a certain field. For that reason, self-published books, newsletters, personal websites, open wikis, blogs, forum postings, and similar sources are largely not acceptable."
"Articles should be based on reliable, third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy."

Johnfos: I agree, but this is a web page sponsored by four charities, not an individual. I did say "It is claimed" in the hope that someone else could provide better information. (You might like to take a look at refererences (in the Article) 11 - which appears to be a politician's web site -with no infromation. and ref 22 - which are claims for the future in a commercial company's press release.)

Absolutely, that is why I didn't just delete the list but moved it here. I think we should reinstate as many points as we can, one at a time, with a reliable source to support it, following discussion here. I have reinstated the points on power factor and harmonics. A typical CFL gave in fact the following measurements:

U=233 V

I= 0,11 A

S=25,2 VA

P=15,9 W

Q=19,5 VAr

PF=0,633 leading

Current harmonics:

1 100%

3 78,2%

5 45,6%

7 18,1%

9 11,7%

11 12,6%

13 9,4%

15 6,7%

Total harmonic distortion on current: 94,6 % !

Now take three CFL of the type mentioned above and connect them in star. With this balanced load, one would expect the neutral current to be nearly zero of course.

Not so: the current in the neutral is 0,177 A, exceeding even the current in the phases (see above).

And the harmonics level of this current is just awful: THD nearly 600 %!

Sorry to sound like a cracked record, but we need to have each point substantiated by a Reliable Source, or else what we have is just Original Research.

I think it would be difficult to reinstate at one point at a time. I have rearranged the material for which there are references under three headings :

Controversy While it is generally agreed that the consumer benefits financially by replacing ordinary incandescent lamps, which are in use for a significant time, with CFLs There are many issues which have raised concerns:

Differences in performance The CFL recommended for the replacement of a 100W incandescent is usually 20W, but for 230V lamps the total light output is 1200 lumens compared with 1300 lumens. But the light output of the CFL may be as low as 70% of initial, at half life [8] while the incandescent lamp should be >93% at three quarters life [9] (However, the leading manufacturers claim their CFLs have better lumen maintenance). Additionally, the polar distribution particularly for the more efficient straight tube types is very different to normal lamps and in many fixtures will give less useful light. [10] Light output is lower when burnt base down, but this is a better burning position in low ambient temperatures [11] Although CFLs are available with different colors, Warm White is usually used for domestic types and is similar to that of incandescent lamps, however the Color Rendering Index is about 85 as they do not radiate at all visible wavelengths. Incandescent lamps have an CRI of 100. [12] The CFLs are particularly poor in the R9 band [13] resulting in unnatural color rendition. A number of organisations believe that certain people suffer undesirable effects if they are exposed to fluorescent lighting, but are not affected by incandescent lighting. [14]

[16] A UK Government Department stated that 50% of domestic light fittings are not suitable for CFLs. [17]


Hidden Undesirable effects CFLs have a very poor power factor, therefore carbon dioxide savings are much less than the wattage indicates, and. produce a high level of harmonics, leading to network pollution, if many are in use, as is becoming the case. When used in three phase networks, considerable currents may occur in the neutral conductor, leading to overload and breakdown [18] [19] [20] (Redcliffe92 (talk) 16:03, 9 April 2008 (UTC))

I'm a little unclear on the requirements, here. If the section were titled 'drawbacks of CFL' then the references would need to be reputable scientifically. However, the section is 'controversy', which surely means we're looking for reputable evidence of controversy, instead.

Apparently the process of verifying whether these are controversies has stalled. It's too bad because the controversy section is incomplete as is-- several of the points above are important issues surrounding the use and adoption of fluorescent bulbs. The spectrum and start-up issues are discussed in the Wikepedia article on CFLs, so presumably the references from there can be used. Atlytle (talk) 20:36, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

This is not an article about controversy surrounding CFLs, yet the controversy section keeps growing. Surely we don't want to repeat what is being said in other WP articles? I'm actually in favour of summarising the controversy section here in one paragraph and providing a Main article link to Compact fluorescent lamp, where the issues are discussed properly. Canada - Clarification Needed

"Federal Environment Minister John Baird has announced a plan to phase-out inefficient light bulbs in Canada by 2012, this will not mean the banning of any existing technology such as incandescent light bulbs."

What does this mean? How is a "phase-out" different from a ban?

Australia

Australia is not planning a blanket ban on incandescent lights, just on inefficient light bulbs. The aim is to improve energy efficiency. To quote "It is important to note that CFLs are not being mandated. Is any country actually planning on banning all incandescent light bulbs?

A comment on the dangers in saying that "Country x has banned incandescent light bulbs". I can find no evidence from any government or official site, or from any of the references, that any country has legislated a total ban on all incandescent light bulbs. Any legislated ban only covers the common general lighting incandescent light bulbs where there are ready and economic alternatives (CFL or LED). Incandescent light bulbs have not been banned where there is no easy alternative. For example minature, oven, low voltage or specialised light bulbs. If we wish to be clear we need to specify exactly what is banned when we say a country has a ban on incandescent light bulbs. Claims that total bans on all incandescent bulbs exist, or will exist, in some countries seems to be an ‘urban myth’, even if popular on Internet pages. I know the UK hasn't implemented a total ban, but the government is trying to pressure retailers to stop selling them in the next four years. The below was taken from the BBC news site:


"Environment Secretary Hilary Benn said that a voluntary agreement with retailers would remove all conventional bulbs from the shops by December 2011" - [1]


Hopefully there will still be smaller retailers that will continue selling them if there's a demand, and that they'll be available online, as long as they're being manufactured. Either that, or the technology will improve to the point where they don't induce headaches and migraine - despite what they say, even new energy saving bulbs I've bought recently still aren't suitable.
