Text from 2002 edit

(the following moved out of the article text:)

I don't want to flame anyone, but I am very put off by this approach. I do not see any place in this outline for "practical" linguistics matters - like descriptions of real languages, language learning and teaching, or even language acquisition by children. Call it applied linguistics if you want to but theoretical linguistics cannot exist without applied linguistics.

The distinction I want to make used to be made in anthropology by the names ethnography and ethnology. Unfortunately I can't do that to "linguistics". I don't dare suggest any changes because I am too hostile to what I see here to be really neutral. -- Kleinecke

ps. I added Panini.

Language acquisition seems like a basic topic; why not add it? Vicki Rosenzweig, Saturday, June 8, 2002

Unsorted text from 2004 and 2005 edit

This page currently is linked from a lot of articles. Is it right to have a link from an article to the Wikipedia namespace ? Jay 14:28, 15 Feb 2004 (UTC)

I notice that although there's nothing at structural linguistics there is content at Structuralism#Structuralism_in_Linguistics. Should this content appear at structural linguistics? Lukobe 04:13, 28 Apr 2004 (UTC)

No, IMO structural linguistics shouldn't exist, since structuralism is a linguistic movement. Just changed the link. --[[User:Valmi|Valmi]] 03:38, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Check out Glossary of linguistic terms. --Ben 03:41, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Quick explanation of Wikipedia outlines edit

"Outline" is short for "hierarchical outline". There are two types of outlines: sentence outlines (like those you made in school to plan a paper), and topic outlines (like the topical synopses that professors hand out at the beginning of a college course). Outlines on Wikipedia are primarily topic outlines that serve 2 main purposes: they provide taxonomical classification of subjects showing what topics belong to a subject and how they are related to each other (via their placement in the tree structure), and as subject-based tables of contents linked to topics in the encyclopedia. The hierarchy is maintained through the use of heading levels and indented bullets. See Wikipedia:Outlines for a more in-depth explanation. The Transhumanist 00:07, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
