Date of formation
editIt says Oakland was created in 1902 out of Franklin Township. It may have come from Franklin, but it was founded in 1695, according to all of the "Welcome to Oakland" signs throughout the town. I fixed it. I live in Oakland, BTW. Cao Wei 20:44, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- Bergen Township and Hackensack Township were craeted in 1693, but Oakland was not craeted in 1693 and 1695. The year 1902 is accurate, regardless of what appears on signs. Alansohn 22:02, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- That might be date of first settlement within the current borders. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 23:33, 24 May 2006 (UTC)
- Ok, I was probably wrong. My friend's dad has lived in Oakland for years, I'm gonna ask him. Thanks. Cao Wei 19:37, 31 May 2006 (UTC)
I added a few things and do have one concern.
editI added some info in the Transportation section. (a little more detail and the addition of links to the (schedules)
I also added a external link to http://www.myoaklandnj.com (Personally I find it fun to read - heh)
My one concern is the content of the section of Commerce. I quote:
"There isn't much shopping in Oakland for a town of its size located right off a major interstate highway. "
To me this is an opinion and not a fact. IMHO there is plenty of shopping. This seems to try and point out someones opinion on "our" current downtown. I feel wikipedia should not be used in this manner.
I refuse to edit it myself since it is border line but would like hear some feed back.
Peace,

After actually looking at the edit logs - There was a lot more to this section (IE: the local retail business names at copper tree) as well as some more info. I'm new to editing wiki but some of the info is still prevalent. I still feel the opening line needs some work ;)

- Agreed, the commerce section violates the NPOV rule and needs cleanup, feel free to do so. Also, I've got a question.. although there is no rail service currently, was there at one time? Are there railroad lines that traverse Oakland? --ChrisRuvolo (t) 14:39, 7 March 2007 (UTC)
- At one point I think there was. From what I recall of town history the old post office and or municipal building (now gone) was a rail station at one point (many many many moons ago) located on 202 and W.Oakland (south side of the tracks)
- As far as the commerce section, I think I will try and put put together a more balanced perspective.
- Thanks for the reply,

- Okay, that matches up with the Image:Bergen Passaic 1872.jpg map. It shows a Oakland stop on the New Jersey Midland Railroad (no article for that yet). --ChrisRuvolo (t) 14:02, 8 March 2007 (UTC)
Over a year ago - wow :) I cleaned up the commerce section a bit (I hope) I tried to keep it on the same track. I know it needs more work - but figgured this would be ok for now. Jamoc74 (talk) 06:14, 1 August 2008 (UTC)
Commerce Section
editI really don't see what's wrong with the way it is now, where no businesses are mentioned. If you're gonna mention some without proper citation, you need to mention others too.
Just out of curiosity, would the below be a good citation?

RE: Muller's Park shootout
editReferring to Oakland residents as "townies", seems a bit derogatory. Sounds like a term that might be used by an out of town "frat boy", describing the local yokels.
Suggest..."local residents", or at worst "Oaklanders". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.217.173.196 (talk) 18:48, 2 September 2012 (UTC)
