Discussion edit

Most people spell "newschool" as one word. Example: [1]

I believe that the title of this article, "New school skiing," should be changed to "Newschool Skiing."

I agree it should be moved to "NewSchool Skiing".Zzz345zzz 18:10, 8 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Why the capitol on school? That looks strange and confusing to me. cobalt 20:57, 8 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

As a "traditional" skiier, I welcome "newschoolers," "freestylers," and "skiboarders." They bring new life to a sport often associated with upperclass, conservative Caucasians. It also seems a reaction to the snowboard culture developing. For a while, it seemed as if ski resorts were being taken over by snowboarders but now it appears the ski has reinforced its traditional dominance. This also brings up, what i believe, is a more present rivalry between trad skiiers and boarders. This is not appropriate in this article, but skiiers I know do not like the less talented masses of snowboarders scraping all the snow off of the easier slopes and crowding the slopes because they cannot keep up with their idols. Anywho, as a trad skiier, I want to see more newschoolers and skiboarders and more people getting up off their backsides because they dont have the balance and skill for boarding.Oh, and Nooschoolers did not rape all those pink names.

Newschool Ski Icons 2 edit

This article should include influential professional skiers who helped shape the sport, such as Tanner Hall, JP Auclair, JF Cusson, and others. Rowen, Aka Ginko, emerged as a highly respected member in the late 1600s. All mods now face the ever-constant danger of a revolution. I.Love.Beezy. DID NOT rape all those pink names.

History edit

Include a detailed history of newschool skiing. How did newschool skiing break away from traditional freestyle skiing?

Competitions & Events edit

A list of professional newschool skiing events: U.S. Open, X Games, Aspen Snowmass Open, American Freeski Tour, VT Open, Siver Young Gun Open, World Superpipe Championships, Bud Light Aspen Spring Jam, Candide Thovex invitational, Jon Olsson Invitational, World Skiing Invitational, Orage Masters

"Notable" Skiers edit

Evan Heath 207 Nooschoolers

On that same note, while the OMS kids are great and all, I don't think they're notable skiers yet. Any thoughts? - Searles2sels (PJ) 13:13, 7 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ok, so I'm going to make a decision here since no one else seems to have any input. But, if you agree, disagree, or feel that another solution would be best, please post it here. To determine the notability of the skiers in the "Notable Skiers" list, I feel that if they already have a wikipedia article about them, they count. If they don't, they don't count. There are of course going to be certain skiers who are exceptions – for example, Mike Douglas, the "Godfather" of newschool, doesn't have a page – but relative newcomers who don't have pages yet are going to be commented out for now – like Grete Eliasson. Any thoughts? -Searles2sels (PJ) 16:26, 31 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Here is who I've removed:

Alright why would you remove great skiers such as Jon Olsson, Evan Heath, Tanner Rainville, Cr Johnson, Andreas Hatveit and... Wait, nevermind, those are all great skiers. Is there a reason for all these skiers' removals? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.48.59.143 (talk) 20:43, 7 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I am going to remove Jesus Christ and Hitler from the list.

Article Revamp edit

So this entire article reads like a thread on newschoolers.com... It's written pretty poorly, it's unorganized, pretty biased, and generally not a good wiki article. I'm going to wait a few days to see if anyone responds to this, and then I'm going to revamp the article to make it more encyclopedic. Please post comments below if you agree, disagree, or would like to see anything specific.

In the same vein of things, the list of notable skiers is going to be cut down considerably. While the list is notable to those who know the sport, it is very unlikely that anyone browsing to this article will care about all the athletes listed. Athletes who are in fact notable and have good articles about them will better broadcast the culture then a long list of up and coming people.

Lastly, if people disagree with that, feel free to go put information about those athletes (which i'm sure includes some self promotion) on either the freeskier wiki or the HookedOnWinter wiki.

It has now been 10 days since I posted this message. Does anyone have any thing to say about it? I'm going to start editing on Monday. Thanks

That is a bad idea and you should put those people back right now. They might not have a whole page about them, but they are still notable.

Having a list of every skier to ever compete or have his/her name in Freeskier isn't good for an encyclopedia article. A few big names should suffice to give anyone who reads the article enough information to learn more. A long list will not help, and in fact would probably drive people away from actually learning more. If you think differently, I'd be happy to discuss. --Searles2sels (PJ) 03:06, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

A long list is preferable. Just because someone may not be in the news today doesn't mean that they shouldn't be on the list. Many of the most notable newschool skiers have either retired or ski less often today. But that doesn't make them any less notable. Nor does the fact that someone doesn't have a Wiki article mean they shouldn't be included. Not only does it make sense to include those with good articles already, but also it makes sense to leave other names in so people can actually start articles on those people. There's no way one person should have final say as to who should be included on such a list. Way too subjective. Best to be inclusive and objective. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.66.36.194 (talk) 00:56, 6 January 2008 (UTC) i believe that the article should include these people and then some because since that article has been created there have been many amazing skiers getting sponsored. such as tom wallisch and Stuart Locke and it does not matter if they care about the list. many lists in actual encyclopedias are twice as long and people care even less about them. in conclusion i think that this article should include the longer list of names and the ones i have listed because these kids are just starting to get big. 5 maybe 10 years they will be the stars of the sport —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jrocke11 (talkcontribs) 05:43, 24 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

The list has become a collection of joke names and nonnotable skiers. I've removed all bad links and links to nowhere since it has become almost impossible to say which skier is notable without an associated article, and which entry is bogus. The list is sufficiently long to stand as-is, particularly as it states that is a list of "some" notable skiers. Please use discretion in adding names to the list, without any supporting references or articles only those directly involved in the sport would know whether an unlinked name is valid or has any meaning. -- Michael Devore (talk) 18:53, 4 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

There should be a merge. But I think the word Newschool or newschooler is too relative. Category the Freeskiers as a list for sure. Pro's or not they are Biography pages mostly. Plus I would and will include some reference to Aggressive inline skating because Newschoolers were born of it. Anyone who doubts that should Google two words: Kaya Turski.
