Why is this not an article about New York State? or about New York City?
This topic has been discussed many times, until community consensus was finally achieved in July 2017. In a nutshell, the term "New York" is often understood as referring to New York City, and often as referring to New York State. Both of these uses are far more frequent to other meanings, however neither the city nor the state are overwhelmingly dominant. For lack of a primary topic, the disambiguation page allows readers to decide where to go. Links to New York are automatically flagged so that their author or a dab volunteer can select the intended destination.
