The New Roads Are Done

edit

I've added all of the new roads to the article. I'm working on the other content as well, in the future.

-- Isipeoria

There are currently 2 transportation sections- shouldn't they be combined? Roads are discussed twice on the page.

Copying and Pasting from Myrtle Beach Tourism Sites/Resources

edit

A lot of people are doing it, so I thought I'd make a note of it on the talk page, but PLEASE do not copy and paste material from these websites. First off, it's plagarism. There are possibly copyright infringement issues that result from it. Second, it's not NPOV. These sites use flowery terms to describe Myrtle Beach because they are advertising for it. It is not exactly what you want in an encyclopedia. Third - and maybe I'm being redundant here - copying and pasting advertising material onto Wikipedia is, in fact, advertising. Wikipedia is not a forum for advertising. So please, quit copying and pasting this material onto the site. If there is something worthwhile from one of those sites, summarize it in neutral terms and link to the source. --Jakob Huneycutt 18:08, 17 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Neutral Point of View

edit

We really need a neutral point of view on Myrtle Beach's page. See below:

With numerous players ranked high in the state and region, they are a powerhouse that are expected to take it all this year. The guys team is as strong as ever and is looking for and excellent season.

An unidenified player from Myrtle Beach High School will be playing a dissapointing role on this team. Upon researching his career statistics it was shown that he was constantly injured. The Thunderboltz are hoping he does not blow their chances of winning any games.

These comments have since been removed. --Isipeoria 20:46, 19 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Why are these sentences in the history section? - "As of 2007 The Pavilion has been torn down, as well as the adjacent club: The Attic. The Attic was one of the first teenage clubs in Myrtle Beach."

Restaurants

edit

This section should be altered or removed due to POV issues (eg. "Great tasting massive buffet"). Some entries may also violate spam policy. I have removed Address and Phone numbers but will leave the section cleanup for a project member. Wikipedia is not a Tourist Guide... Squeakygoose 16:01, 27 July 2006 (UTC)Reply

I live in MB. There are several "great tasting massive buffets" in the area. Believe me, I know. I've eaten at almost every restaurant in a 20 mile radius! --Krusty Surfer Dude 02:15, 25 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
I concur. Restaurant section should be removed. Gruber76 14:01, 7 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Waves Sound

edit

I want to add a sound of the waves I made. Does anything think it's good enough?

--Cngodles 16:47, 18 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

They're nice, but I don't think they really serve to add anything to the article... Carson (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 18:23, 20 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Define Myrtle Beach

edit

Do you think it's possible to define Myrtle Beach without turning it into a promotional tool? It seems that the quote-unquote "history" of the area seems to center around road construction and popular attractions opening. Is there a core to this place or what? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.211.86.134 (talk) 04:51, 9 January 2007 (UTC).Reply

Encyclopedia or advertising bulletin board

edit

This entry has a high ratio of advertisements to useful information. Other towns don't have restaurant sections, etc, etc. It doesn't add to the value of Wikipedia to have this tourism plug here, and I will be doing some serious pruning if I don't hear a consensus to hold back. Gruber76 22:32, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Gruber - I did receive your notice about the link out for Myrtle Beach Condos news on the Myrtle Beach page. The link is the actual content source of the news article. I did not plagerize this source and did write individual content, but I felt my information needed a resource link. See the news article link at http://www.myrtlebeachcondosdirect.com/newsDetail.php?id=47 —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 24.31.209.171 (talk) 03:18:55, August 19, 2007 (UTC)

Please refrain from adding commercial links. Understand that even if this was the source of the statistic, it's unreliable to just simply pull the stat from the air on a commercial site. It reeks of site promotion. I do thank you for some of the help on the history section, but understand that external links should be limited to that which is directly Myrtle Beach related, not a fan or discussion forum, no matter the focus. crtrue 01:51, 27 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

More Sources! Less Advertising!

edit

I'm still sad to say that this article still reads, after at least a year of improvements, like a giant brochure for Myrtle Beach.

The article is junk for anyone just trying to learn about the place, and not trying to find a place to eat, shop, or live -- believe it or not, some people actually want just the facts.

I think there is a serious need for improvement in this article. A lot of the sections have way too much emphasis on the tourist trade and it's almost impossible to cut away what is fact from the giant, slaughtered pig that is this article.

In kinder words, I want people, actual people who live in Myrtle Beach, armed with real resources (e.g. backcopies of "The Horry Indepedent" and the like) to take a stab at this article, because as it stands, it really just stinks with the kind of commercial glossing that has clouded what this place really is -- a notable, okay place to live, regardless of the industry.

Phew

edit

I'm pooped, but I have to say, this article is starting to look more like a serious Wikipedia article now. Please help as much as you can! I can't do this alone, much as I try -- go to your library and start copying down information from the IRQ (http://www.hchsonline.org/irq/index.html), as we need some solid sources for our history.

Name?

edit

What is the source for the claim that the city was named after crape myrtle? I've seen another source that states the city is named for wax myrtle, a completely different plant that is a common seaside shrub. I find the latter derivation far more plausible. MrDarwin 17:31, 6 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're probably right, but a quick search finds theories abounding all around, from Crape Myrtles to even Sweet Myrtles, which as far as I can tell, aren't even found down here. I do remember reading something about the wax myrtle at the library while doing a little research, but I don't think there is a definite consensus, seeing as the story is essentially hearsay and borderline folk lore.
[1] (Crape)
[2] (Crape)
However, the official city FAQ lists the wax myrtle and has the strongest historical base, so without objections, I say it's safe to stick with the wax myrtle.
[3]
On a sidenote, does anyone have any information on the name "Withers" being applied to Myrtle Beach? The FAQ mentions it but I've never heard of it in any of my research. crtrue 10:26, 8 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
At some point the text regarding the origin of the name "Myrtle Beach" and reference to its (probably) being named for wax myrtle has been deleted; why is this part of the article apparently so problematic? MrDarwin (talk) 19:25, 7 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Comment from Top

edit

Hello,I realize that you have a very big website and that it is going to take a whole lot of time to probably do work to each and every different page that you have on different pieces of information. I will come in and periodically input in some stuff into your Myrtle Beach page because it is heavily missing some things that I think you guys should have in there to be talking about a city with this type of magnitude. It like other major cities like it must have lots and lots(tons) of info on what they have to offer and also what they have as for entertainment and for history as well. So, I will come in and help you out with this. You may want to come in and rearrange it sometimes though. You know update the information that I place in.

We welcome constructive input, just like any other article, but Myrtle Beach has some special challenges in trying to be unbiased. Sometimes it's hard to discern where fact ends and promotion begins. I have nothing against highlighting notable businesses, attractions, etc, but the line has to be drawn somewhere to keep it from becoming a freefall of local businesses, trying to get their piece of Wikipedia "real estate".
To be fair, I'm a little vague as to what it is you're inputting, as you've left yourself unsigned and unidentified. Understand that we're not actively against the businesses or otherwise you might be trying to promote -- we just really have to draw the line somewhere or it becomes both unreadable and little more than another promotional website.
If you have something constructive to add, by all means, add it. Try to integrate it as much as possible into what we have, and above all, before you hit "Save page", ask yourself, Is this something I would want to read myself?. Carson (talk)

Coordinates are wrong

edit

The current coordinates are in the Atlantic Ocean. It appears that the entry is one decimal degree too far south, so I have changed the location to 33.720833°, -78.875556° Kwame donaldson (talk) 21:10, 15 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am aware, it's just a placeholder until someone actually gets the right information. I wrote those zeros, so believe me, it's not intentional. No one is going to see them and think the average is 000. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.153.217.128 (talk) 21:22, 25 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Add a section about Ocean Watersports?

edit

As there is tons to do in Myrtle Beach for those vacationing, an Ocean Watersports section would be a nice addition give more diversity of what there is to do around town. Here is a link to the Ocean Watersports webpage: http://www.parasailmyrtlebeach.com/
