This is really really random and I know it's going to sound weird, but I simply must say it - Murtagh is hot. And Thorn (on the cover of Eldest) is gorgeous. He makes Saphira look too thin and not muscled enough - but maybe female dragons are built more delicately then male dragons. I actually hope that Murtagh and Thorn come over to the good side, so Saphira chooses Thorn over the green dragon who is obviously meant for her. And I agree that we can expect a relationship between Murtagh and Nasuada once Galbatorix is defeated.

Murtagh is definitely the most interesting character in Inheritance (I'm not a fan, but an A-S girl if you know what I mean), and he's a huge favorite with everybody. I think he's pretty cool - but Paolini doesn't seem to like him very much. I mean, Murtagh's smarter and stronger than Eragon, and if it weren't for that stupid elf magic and dragon magic, he'd kick Eragon's ass. Eragon himself couldn't beat Murtagh, it's his undeserved "special abilities" that can do it. Paolini gives Murtagh a pretty raw deal, if you ask me. - isolde42, July 29th 2006

Yeah, Christopher doesn't give a damn about what Murtagh goes through or what will happen to him, he only care about Eragon and Arya. It's kinda obvious, isn't it? Murtagh's my favorite character, and if he dies in Book 3 then I'm going to completely lose faith in Christopher as a writer. You can't just callously kill off such an amazing character - why can't your hero die?! Oh wait I forgot, Eragon can't die because of Angela's stupid prophecy and Deathwatch, which gave away all the plot endings. Nice way to build suspense Christopher. Murtagh deserves better than you.

If Murtagh dies, C.P. is getting the meanest hate letter of his life. Too many of my favorite characters in different books have died (Dustfinger, The Black Rider, Garet Jax, ect). I hate when you know that a character is most likely going to die, and you can only wait to find out. Murtagh doesn't deserve to die!!!!! Murtagh: Live or Die?

It sucks that he's barely featured in the Eragon teaser that came out ages ago...like 0.5 seconds, and he's the most interesting character in the trilogy! That's off topic, but I had to let it out...okay, I want to set up a kind of poll here. Who thinks Murtagh will survive Book 3, and who thinks he will die? I think he's dead. - inkblot2 July 13 2006

I would absolutely hate it if he died, and hate Paolini for being so callous, but somehow I don't think he will. I think something much worse will happen - he survives, but Thorn dies. That is monstrously cruel...Murtagh has lost or been betrayed by all of his loved ones in life (father tried to kill him then died himself, mother ran off and left him; he was raised by enemies and then his only friend was killed, his brother is now his enemy...), and his life so far has been absolutely horrible, and then to lose his bonded brother? It'll crack him, he'll finally just break. But I don't see how Thorn can possibly survive - he's going to be killed in battle by Saphira and the green dragon. It's very likely that Murtagh will go down with him, and I'd almost prefer it to Murtagh surviving without Thorn. That is just awful. Either way, Murtagh is doomed - he can either die when he's actually done nothing wrong, or he can survive and live a cursed life. Those are his only options. -- Emmaking, July 14 2006

It sucks that murtagh only has two options, both of which are so horrible. His life so far has been hell (I'm glad I'm not the only who finds something very wrong with a woman who abandons her son when his father just tried to kill him)..it's been worse than eragon's life! much, much worse. anyway, considering what emmaking said, i'd rather have murtagh die (sob) than have him live and thorn die. the author will probably kill murtagh though - he doesn't seem to give a damn about him. - shazzer july 15 2006

I don't want him to die. He is the only character that I actually care about and defend in a conversation. Anyone else could die, and I wouldn't care. He probably will die because almost all of my favorite characters from books are dead or probably will be. His life definatly has been hell. If he does die, it will probably be Galbatorix's stupid oaths fault. He would be at peace if he dies, though. I would rather have him die doing something right (like killing Galbatorix) than having him lived a cursed life misled by lies. - The person without an account

Whoa, it's nice to see that so many people contributed to my "poll". I guess the general consensus is that yes, Murtagh will die. How depressing...but every big story has to have a tragic hero, right? Murtagh is to Inheritance what Sirius Black is to Harry Potter, or what Anakin Skywalker is to Star Wars. The only thing that bugs me is that I feel Murtagh is shortchanged - he isn't given enough "page space", especially in Eldest! I was so annoyed by that. • I think Murtagh is more important to Inheritance than Sirius Black is to Harry Potter. Murtagh's personality maybe closer to Sirius, but his role is more like Snape's, I think. Both of them are arguably the most complex characters in their respective series, and nobody knows if they're good or evil. • Murtagh's going to die, purely because some main character has to die, and since Christopher Paolini would never kill his pwecious Awya and Ewagon (sorry, but I have a major problem with them), or that idiot Roran, he's going to offhandedly kill Murtagh - one of the few characters with true potential and who's actually likeable. I'm planning on reading Book 3 only to find out what happens to Murtagh, but I know I'm going to be so pissed off when he dies tragically (and unnecessarily) and Eragon, Arya, and their dragons get the perfect happy ending. Of course Eragon will be happy - he didn't exactly trouble himself mourning Murtagh and Ajihad at the beginning of Eldest, did he? He and Saphira showed up at Ajihad's funeral drunk, for God's sake. I agree with isolde42 as well, and it makes me mad. Murtagh should have been the hero of Inheritance, not Eragon. He's smarter, stronger, cooler and waaay more interesting, plus he grew up amidst all the historical events and power figures of the day. He saw the last of the Thirteen Forsworn, Galbatorix and the mysterious Selena who I suspect got laid with more men besides Morzan. He grew up in the royal palace and met the Evil King (omigosh GALBY!), and I suspect his thoughts would be more interesting to read about - he isn't a whiner who goes running to his dragon every time he pricks his toe. He's not an original character, but I wish he'd been created by a more competent and caring writer than Christopher, a writer who actually cared about him. - pikachu2raichu August 6th 2006

Murtagh is the single coolest character in Inheritance, and he's not about to let anybody kill him or insult him - he's going to break free of his bonds and teach Galbatorix what happens to people who mess with him. • He's not going to die, peeps. And stop making out Chris to be a horrible character hating twerp. If he didn't like the character, he wouldn't have made it. And have any of you considered the fact that Saphira might not take to Greenie? I'm thinking Saphira/Thorn. Anyway, why in the hell would Thorn die? The only ones who would stand a good chance against him are Saphira and Greenie. And do you honestly think that they are going to kill one of the last remaining Dragons? A race can't be built on two alone, unless the siblings mate. What the Dragon's need are more females.

And it's quite possible that if Murtagh dies Thorn will die right along with him, Brom did mention that in most cases both Dragon and Rider die. My thinking points in the direction of Murt learning Galby's true name and somehow breaking free.

Nasuada

  • You made a fair point on the Snape thing. As for Nasuada...he never really got a chance to know her, right? Or did he? CP didn't really describe the days in Tronjheim after the battle, except for Eragon and his scar. When Eragon was being healed by Angela after killing Durza, Murtagh may have met Nasuada, as they were both in the battle. Then Murtagh was knocked unconscious and sent back...did she go see him? When Murtagh was scouring the dwarf tunnels with Ajihad, did he see her before he went off? None of that is explained, which is somewhat frustrating. • I think it's more likely that Nasuada will end up with King Orrin. Murtagh and she seem to like each other, but it can't happen because they're enemies, and he'll be forced to die defending Galbatorix. Also, he's a Rider, she's a mortal. There's no getting around that - whether or not they like each other, they can never be together. And doesn't it seem practical for King Orrin...he and Nasuada are the two human leaders of the Rebellion. I can see them getting together, if only for political reasons. - Faultytowers July 19 2006

• I think Jack Sparrow is more funny than hot, although I agree Murtagh is definitely hot. He's the only character I really find interesting. As for Nasuada, she's cool - she's had some character development in Eldest, which is more than I can say for other characters that got more attention, like Arya or Eragon.. I think that all young heroes/anti-heroes in cheesy "epics" such as this one need a romantic interest. Eragon has Arya, Roran has Katrina, and even the Twins probably had Trianna...so who will Murtagh have? Elva? Too young. Angela? Too old, and weird besides. A noblewoman of the Empire? Can't be, because we don't know any and for a major character like Murtagh, it needs to be someone we've already been introduced to. Nasuada's perfectly positioned for a tragic tale of forbidden love - the Rebel leader and the King's right hand man. Not to mention she's been set up to be quite attractive, and Murtagh is the ultimate in fictional hot bad guys. There's a reason her appearance has been described - hot young women who are also prominent characters are incomplete without a love interest, as Paolini's treatment of Arya proves. So Nasuada looks like the most likely partner for Murtagh - and to be honest, I like her best out of all the female leads. - isolde42 July 29 2006

• • Why are you so certain Nasuada should be with King Orrin? Read the 'Possible Romance' section of Murtagh's wiki page; there has been clear foreshadowing concerning Murtagh and Nasuada. Nasuada has a scene with King Orrin, and from her POV, but she never shows any interest in him, or feels attracted to him. Remember, if you get a scene from a character's POV and they don't indicate that they notice anything about the other person's appearance or personality, it's not a very good sign. On the other hand, Nasuada and Murtagh have never had a scene together, and yet we can tell they are attracted to each other from the way they talk about each other. • Guess what? Over at Inheritance Forums, there's a poll about who's your fave character from Inheritance. Keep in mind ALL readers participated, not just Murtagh fans...and Murtagh got the most votes! I always suspected he was the most popular character, and now I have proof. And Thorn was everyone's second favorite dragon after Saphira, which is quite amazing considering Thorn didn't have any lines and only made one appearance so far. - inkblot2 August 7 2006

I think that Murtagh and Thorn will come over to the good side but I don't think that Thorn and Saphira will mate, just because I don't think that it sounds like something Christopher would do based on what we have read so far. I agree that there will be some romance between Murtagh and Nasuada though. -thornrider19

You can uncross your fingers. CP said that he made a major change to the ending of Book 3 that "involves Nasuada" and of which he is very excited, which I think is a fair indication that she survives. She's a bit flat, but she got more development (went from pretty girl to rebel leader) than some other characters, like Arya. - murtaghrider

• Sheesh, you're all a bunch of cynics. If you hate most of the characters and The Author why are you reading the books? Anyway, I think Murtagh/Nasuada is most likely. Their personalities compliment each other nicely and I think even if they don't fall in love they may become good friends, depending on weather or not Murt survives which is most definately within the realm of possibility. It is possible, I suppose that Nasuada MIGHT become the next rider. It would tie up a few knots and could be the twist involving Nasuada that Chris mentioned. I really see no point in Arya becoming the next rider seeing as she's already powerful and imortal. She does not need to be a rider. However I was simply stating my opinion and I believe that is my business as much as the various critiques are the business of those who have posted them. Nor do I see how anyone was arguing, once again people are entitled to their opinions and are entitled to state them no matter what other peoples opinions are. There is a differance between debate and argument.
