Talk:Municipalities of the canton of Vaud

Latest comment: 16 years ago by Nitsansh in topic new districts from Jan 2008

Is anyone interested in a small sub-project with the goal of creating stubs for all municipalities in the Canton of Vaud, by copying infoboxes from de: or fr:, and adding the corresponding navigational templates for the different districts ? I have done this for the Canton of Geneva already, as well as for the District of Morges, and will continue (slowly) with the other districts. Any help welcome... Schutz

I'd be happy to help. I did this some time ago for the district of Yverdon, e.g. Orzens (I figured it was preferable to some of the odd stubs we got back then and all the time needed to clean up). D6 can easily take care of uploading a short article (we just need to decide on the text) and copying the infobox from de: or fr:. If additional elements should be added a specific municipality, this can be added as well or done manually later. We could (re)activate Wikipedia:WikiProject Swiss municipalities. -- User:Docu
I am quite happy with the stub I have seen so far, for example Denens. I have just completed the "mayor" field manually from fr:, checked the link to the municipality web site, and other misc cleanups. Currently, I am working mainly on district for which stubs already exists (at the moment: district of Lausanne), but if we can get your bot to upload stubs for the new ones, I will look at them in priority. How long would it take ? Also, I think reactivating the Wikiproject would be a good idea. I will have a look at similar, active, project to see what can/should be done. I added a few for the districts of Nyon and Moudon (a short stub, interwikis and then the infobox from de:). I could do the other municipalities at a time when the server is a bit faster. -- User:Docu
Excellent. I will have a look and see if anything has to be updated. Short comments so far:
  • Should we wikify municipality ? It was done on many articles on Switzerland, and I am usually following this practice
  • The link to the district points to a redirect (District of Nyon instead of Nyon (district)).
  • It looks like the page on de: does not have information about the Mayor, while the one on fr: does. Any chance you can get it automatically ? Otherwise, it may be a good reason for me to experiment with a bot...

Thank you for looking into them.
  • (1) Municipality: ok, I will change it.
  • (2) I can change it if you insist (personally I don't quite like [[Nyon (district)|district of Nyon]]).
That's fine with me (redirects are not expensive anyway). Schutz 23:33, 5 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
  • (3) We should be able to add additional information in all infoboxes by bot at a later stage based on the information available in German/French/Italian etc. (hopefully in not too many runs). Personally, I stopped using the French data as there were too many variations of the infobox (there were 3 or 4 templates), but I wouldn't mind including the neighboring municipalities or the mayor (if we want to keep him/her, it's harder to keep it up to date). It's obviously easier to add/update the templates by bot. If you want to try pywikipedia bot, I can publish the additions to translator.py etc.
I won't have time to do it in the near future, anyway, but I will ask you again later. Anyway, there are municipal elections in two months in Vaud, so there is no real point updating the information about the mayors for now. Schutz 23:33, 5 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
BTW the stubs on municipalities in the district of Echallens could probably use a replacement with the standard. -- User:Docu
Echallens (district) is done. Hopefully, I can get more districts done before they redo the district bounderies. -- User:Docu
The vote at the Parliament about the new boundaries should happen in June, and if accepted, the change will happen next year, so we should have time to finish all the stubs... On my side, I plan to finish all the navigational templates for the (current) districts before the end of the week. Schutz 23:33, 5 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Great. I will try to get the 3-4 remaining districts done in the next couple of days. I adapted the translator.py to better use the French version of the infoboxes and started using those instead of the German version. As Template:Infobox Swiss towns now supports optional fields, more information is being displayed.
BTW I discovered WikiSense/CategoryIntersect.php (Vaud list) which allows to visualize which articles already include the district templates. As all district articles include (or should include) a table of the municipalities, the footer may not be needed there. An advantage would be the district articles wouldn't appear in the Category:Municipalities of the canton of Vaud. -- User:Docu
I was annoyed as well about the fact that the district were appearing in Category:Municipalities of the canton of Vaud. Ok, I am convinced, the footer should not appear on the pages for the districts. I have started removing them and cleaning up the pages a bit more (among others, adding Category:Swiss district templates). I should be done in the next couple of days. I finished creating the stubs and started adding templates to the articles without the district templates of Category:Vaud. -- User:Docu
Templates should be done as well (except for the Pays-d'Enhaut), but the CategoryIntersect seems to miss some articles. -- User:Docu
Excellent ! I can do the last template, or we can just skip it for now given that (1) there are only 3 articles in the district, (2) the district will disappear in the forthcoming reorganisation. I have fixed my last todo item (create article Vevey (district) and do some cleanups); it looks to me like we are done with the Municipalities of the canton of Vaud... should we move on ? I'm interested in taking on Fribourg, but seeing how efficient you (and D6) are, I must really get into the bot world... Schutz 00:52, 12 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
More or less it's done for now. I used the catintersect tool to look for French language articles with images at Commons and added those the articles as well. At one point we'd need to work out the maps (if we want them, most (if not all) are in German) and the coat of arms (all for Vaud are available at commons).
BTW Canton of Jura has fewer municipalities. Maybe we could do this canton next. The 380 were a few too many for my taste and the bot operation wasn't all that automatic .. -- User:Docu

new districts from Jan 2008

edit

The list of municipalities should be ammended to the new district boundaries. See Wi-Fr.--Nitsansh (talk) 01:02, 6 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
