I've moved this question here from inline commentary from the article.
- Question: Who uses this creaky formalism (hybridization) anymore?
- Answer: Anyone who works with molecules made of elements residing in period 2 of the main group, namely carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen. In other words all those pesky organic and organometallic chemists.
If the author of the question cares to rewrite the content of the hybridization section in the language of MO theory I would welcome the change. Personally I can not conceive of a concise way to do such a rewrite or more importantly where it could be cited. As for the other comments I'm sure you know Wikipedia is the encyclopedia is the that anyone can edit so if you see a problem its best to fix it. Few editors are offended by having their work improved through rewrites. In contrast cranky inline commentaries do little good. Furthermore identifying an concept as a formalism in chemistry is like stating the sky is blue, it adds little to the conversation.
