It is supposed that West African people and Bantu got Iron techniques from Meroë.

Meroe is situated at 33°44' E / 16°54' N according to the documents submitted 31/08/2004 by Dr. Salah M.Ahmed, Secr. Gen. Sudanese Nat. Comm. UNESCO, National Board for Antiquities and Museum. A map by the Oriental Institute, University of Chicago (dated 1997) shows Meroe to the east of the Nile between Khartoum and Atbara. [3], as does the map in the Cambridge History of Africa J. D. Ambiguity and confusion

I think that the topic of this article has been anglicized as Merowe at times, causing considerable confusion. The problem is compounded when referring to Merowian culture, e.g. in the captioning of archeological finds displayed in temporary exhibitions. I acquired expert knowledge of aspects of Nile geography in 1953, and this confusion perplexed me when looking at displays of recent excavations at the British Museum. Also, is there evidence that the inhabitants relocated to the "new" Merowe? This really needs input from an Egyptologist. Michael P. Barnett (talk) 11:45, 7 January 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, just checked further. The editions of Encyclopedia Britannica and Encyclopedia Americana that I have at hand identify the site as Meroe, not Merowe, and use adjective Meroitic, not Merowitic. The (then proposed) Merowe dam was included in the computer simulations of the Nile in 1955 (not 1953). I am not qualified to comment on the accuracy of the article, but I see that it incorporates material from the 1911 edition of Encyclopedia Britannica, and does not mention excavations made since 1910, just over a century ago. I believe that much more archaeological work has been done since then, including the discovery of Christian artefacts. I deleted the statement about inheriting the spelling from the Romans -- spelling is not "inherited" and the diaeresis was not used in Latin. I still thinks this needs input from an expert. You haven't said what you think was wrong with the coordinates or what correction you're seeking. I've moved the coordinates a bit westward, but ancient Meroë apparently covered quite a bit of ground, from the surviving pyramids in the east to the Nile in the west. Are you quite sure you have the correct one? According to their respective Wikipedia entries:

Not to be confused with Merowe, Sudan

Merowe is a town in Northern State, Sudan, near Karima Town, about 330 kilometres (210 mi) north of Khartoum.

Quite so! To make things even more confusing - there are important 'pyramids' archaeological sites in Merowe/Karima area - Nuri, Jabel Barkal and El-Kurru. All three sites are covered in wikipedia. The other important thing is 'Meroe' is not equal 'Meroe Island' Titus Atomicus (talk) 19:50, 22 April 2018 (UTC)

It is plagiarism
