Silverchair

One of Australia's bigger rock bands. See Silverchair. We'd need evidence from independent reliable sources (i.e. written about somewhere) that the band members grew up there and/or that Daniel Johns lives there before we can put it in. Orderinchaos 19:59, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

School

[1] shows two conflicting sources:

• The Junction School building centenary, 1875-1975 / Fredman, Lionel E. 1975.
• The Junction School centenary, 1860-1960. 1960.

Plus the school's website which says 1872. How on earth do we check which is the right one? Orderinchaos 11:37, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Bizarre. Maybe the website folk are guessing. I have the 1960 Centenary booklet here. Sir John Northcott, the NSW State Governor was the guest-of-honour for the centenary celbrations, and the heading on page four of the book says: "The First Hundred Years of the Junction School" and goes on to say that the first Junction School was established in 1860 in the Welsh Congregational Church building. By 1874 the building was deemed inadequate and Mr Edward Christopher Merewether gave the land for the first new building which was erected the following year. The school produced the booklet and they seem to be clear that it is their centenary! In addition, The Newcastle Morning Herald on 23rd October 1985, carried two entire pages (15 and 16) celebrating "The Junction celebrates 125 years of education". If the school has a website maybe we ought to leave a message on it about this? Christchurch

This discussion should probably be at Talk:The Junction, New South Wales since the school is in The Junction, not Merewether. That aside for the moment, the school website says, "The original timber school was named Newcastle South Public School. Construction of a permanent brick building was completed in 1874 on land donated by Mr Edward Charles Merewether." I'm guessing that it's Newcastle South Public School that dates to 1860 and at some time, probably in 1872, the school's name was changed to The Junction Public School when the land was donated and construction of the buildings was commenced. I doubt that the dates on the school's website are the result of a guess. I have emailed the principal directly for confirmation but he may not check his DET emails until school returns next week. --AussieLegend (talk) 12:26, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

I see we have duplicated each other here. It is debateable whether it sould be discussed on another Talk Page us until very recently it was clearly part of Merewether. I see St. Joseph's still gives its address as Merewether and the 2291 Merewether postcode includes The Junction.Christchurch (talk) 12:33, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Yeah interestingly I checked my old street directories and the 1985 and 1988 ones mark The Junction as a district within the locality of Merewether, but the 1992 one clearly marks it as separate, as do all since. My guess is in the mass gazettal in June 1991, a lot of districts became bounded localities in their own right. Orderinchaos 12:51, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

Actually, the school hasn't been part of Merewether since 1991. The school's address may be shown on the website as Merewether but that's clearly wrong. The postal address is shown as a PO Box at The Junction. The Junction Post Office is in Kenrick St which is immediately adjacent to the school. Placing the school in the Merewether article was just the mistake of a previous editor. That the school is in suburb called The Junction is supported by numerous authoritative sources so there's no real issue there. Unbelievable that there is any dispute here when the school clearly celebrated its centenary in 1960 witht he State Governor present and published a Centenary Book. One despairs at this kind of nit-picking. 82.22.214.212 (talk) 15:36, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
