Lokon Jiachuan Ford Transit

Someone mixed up the Lokon Ford Transit with the Xinkai Mercedes Sprinter. The Lokon Ford Transit is available with a Sprinter lookalike option (headlights,hood & fenders). But this doesn't make a Sprinter. I'm going to undo the changes of TheAutoJunkie until he can show up with valid sources for his claims that a Ford Transit is a Sprinter. Here are two photos: One showing the Lokon Jiachuan based on the 4th gen. Ford Transit and one showing a Sprinter. They're completely different vehicles. Doorhandles, B-pillar, everything ....

???

Is the US Sprinter really available with a gasoline engine? Will anyone write an article about the Mercedes-Benz T1 van?!

Mercedes-Benz connection

To be clear, are the Dodge/Freightliner Sprinters sold in North America manufactured by Mercedes-Benz? Which year-models have the inline-5 turbodiesel?

All model years from 1995 to 2006 are using the 5 cylinder turbodiesel.194.25.108.84 13:20, 8 November 2006 (UTC)

Yes they are manufactured in Germany. Then broken down and shipped to North America. They are then reassembled and sold under the Dodge/Freightliner band name. Dodge/Freightliner has a little bit different engine to meet Dodge factory standards. The Freightliner Sprinter is the same van with the Freightliner badge. The Sprinters you see in the U.S. with the Mercedes badge, is actually a Dodge Sprinter with the Mercedes appearance package. Dodge Sprinters in America

There are several Dodge Sprinters in my area... they have the standard American left-handed steering, and I believe have gasoline engines. Ahanix1989 13:33, 09 August 2006

Dodge van

Would've been nice if they had kept the American design. The Sprinter is too tall and has small wheels...good for high density Europe but too foreign for the US. RMartinez

Yeah, I think that was a big mistake on Chrysler's part. Maybe the van will be popular with the business/trucking crowd, but it's so butt-ugly that no consumer will ever buy one. About the Sprinter

I'm curious as to how the Sprinter was released on the American market. I mean, back in 2002 I saw a Freightliner Sprinter ambulance at an air show, and I was surprised to see one there. It's great that we actually have a European-styled van sold here. I like it better than American-style vans such as the Ford Econoline. Heck, if Mercedes-Benz can sell the Sprinter in the USA, then why not have the Ford Transit sold here, or have the Opel Movano sold here under the Chevrolet & GMC brands? Why is the Sprinter the only van of its kind sold in America? What gives? All that aside, the Sprinter is a cool van. Sgt. Bond 00:46, 24 April 2007 (UTC)

The reason for not introducing Opel vans or other European vans is because a) most European vans only come with manual transmissions and 4-cylinder engines (or diesel engines), making them inappropriate for the US market. To succeed in the US you MUST have at least V6 power and automatic. and b) importing these vans from Europe would be VERY expensive making them uncompetitive with the local offerings.Davez621 (talk) 03:28, 20 November 2008 (UTC)

Freightliner Sprinter no more?

The official Freightliner Sprinter website (put up 2004) at http://www.fl-sprinter.com/ no longer has any Freightliner Sprinter info. Instead it is a clone of http://www.z-atlas.com/ -- a medical website. Did they abandon or sell the domain name? There is no mention of the Sprinter anywhere on http://www.freightlinertrucks.com/ either. The Wayback machine at http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.fl-sprinter.com/ shows the last snapshot with Freightliner Sprinter info at July 5th 2008.

If Freightliner Sprinter really is no more, then http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freightliner_Trucks will have to be changed to. It currently says "The Freightliner badge also adorns the Sprinter, a Class 2 van produced by Mercedes-Benz in Europe and marketed through Freightliner dealers, as well as through Chrysler dealers as a Dodge-branded offering." 75.84.238.18 (talk) 20:14, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Freightliner is still selling Sprinters. The first sentence in this article is wrong. Who says they are substantially more expensive to maintain

Whoever wrote that "It has been noted that Sprinters are substantially more expensive to buy and maintain than their American counterparts" should have documented who it was that "noted" that. "More expensive to buy" I have no problem with -- it's a simple matter of listing the prices, which the article does. "Substantially more expensive"? how big is "substantially"? "More expensive to maintain"? Says who? Commercial vehicles are often made so that they last longer and require less maintenance. 75.84.238.18 (talk) 21:09, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

Engine errors

There are a couple of incorrect statements about engine details, including:

"For its engine choices, the Sprinter is currently offered with inline four and inline six cylinder diesel engines; inline six cylinder petrol/gasoline; or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) engines in Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. In North America, only the six cylinder 3.0 litre turbodiesel and six cylinder 3.5 litre gasoline engines are offered."

North American 3.5-liter gas V6 dropped in 2009, as Sprinter-Wiki page mentioned below notes, so a more accurate version is: "For its engine choices, the Sprinter is currently offered with inline four and inline six cylinder diesel engines; inline six cylinder petrol/gasoline; or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) engines in Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America. In North America, only the six cylinder 3.0-liter turbodiesel engine is offered."

Also, the following is not correct: "In 2010[when?], Dodge lost its contract to sell Sprinters in USA/Canada and a subset of Mercedes-Benz dealers gained that franchise, and the OM646 4-cylinder diesel engine replaced by more powerful OM651 4-cylinder diesel engine.[citation needed] Despite the brand change, Sprinters sold in the United States still lack many popular options that are available in Europe, including 4 wheel drive, Command Navigation System,electric sliding doors, and keyless entry (which senses the presence of the key fob and automatically opens a sliding door)."

The OM646 and OM651 engines are only available in Europe currently, and the NAFTA Sprinter does have keyless entry, just no factory-available electric sliding door option, so this should be something like: "In 2010, Chrysler lost its contract to sell Dodge-branded Sprinters in North America, and the franchise reverted back to the existing Freightliner Sprinter dealers and a subset of Mercedes-Benz dealers who had agreed to add the Sprinter to their lineup. Also, the OM642 3.0-liter turbodiesel (used in North American Sprinters since 2007) gained a new emissions setup and improved horsepower and torque ratings, going from 154 hp and 280 ft-lbs. of torque to 188 hp and 325 ft-lbs. of torque. Despite the brand change, Sprinters sold in the United States still lack many popular options that are available in Europe, including 4-wheel drive, Command Navigation System, and electric sliding doors."

Fuel economy units

There's a heading named "fuel economy" to compare the different versions of the sprinter I guess, but the provided fuel economy is unit-less and lacks context for whether it's city roads or highway or... the values are given as 24, 22, 21...
