Change type of page: from disambiguation to broad-concept article
editThe redirect to Mode of Transport is part of a major problem because it mixes up two different concepts which are both explained in the article on transport:
Modes of transport include air, land (rail and road), water, cable, pipeline and space while
Means of transport are any of the different kinds of transport facilities used to carry people or cargo. They may include vehicles, riding animals and pack animals. Vehicles may include wagons, automobiles, bicycles, buses, trains, trucks, helicopters, watercraft, spacecraft and aircraft.
The problem is similar in Wikidata where modes and means of transport are mixed up in Wikidata item Q334166 while, at the same time, a Wikimedia disambiguation page means of transport exists under Wikidata item Q2516347.
It will be required to split the Mode of transport article and move one part of it to Means of transport. However, as a first step, I suggest to change its page type from disambiguation to broad-concept article.Thomaszwilling (talk) 17:34, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
- This list is really not necessary. All these means of transport are easily found from the modes article and wikilinks therein. Ultimately you are listing the means under their mode of transport sections. So it is a content fork. Please restore the redirect. Polyamorph (talk) 21:20, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
- @Polyamorph:Thank you for listening. I am sorry. I cannot see that mode of transport and means of transport are synonyms for the same concept. What you call a content fork is usually called a disambiguation page, but here it takes the form of a broad-concept article. This means nothing else than it is necessary to keep them apart. Or would you really argue that ships and sea transport mean the same thing in a phrase like Ships are a means of transport used for sea transport of goods? I wouldn't and actually it even prevents keeping both concepts apart in Wikidata. I need this change in order to be able to split the two different concepts in Wikidata.Thomaszwilling (talk) 23:12, 14 May 2021 (UTC)
- I understand your point, but we don't create articles on the basis of wikidata sorting.
All the means of transport listed are readily found from the modes of transport page, so I really don't see the need for a DAB or BCA.Actually, I've changed my mind, the list is easier to navigate. Polyamorph (talk) 05:25, 15 May 2021 (UTC)

- Thank you. I appreciate it. I also invite you to think again about the need to match Wikipedia articles with Wikidata entries. It makes it much easier to find an article in other languages. Thomaszwilling (talk) 08:58, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Thomsazwilling, The usual workaround if you find a redirect which you cannot create a sitelink for is:
- Remove the redirect code from the redirect page you want to link to.
- Add the page as a sitelink in Wikidata.
- Revert the removal of the redirect code from the redirect page.
- As described here. I am no expert on wikidata but it is simply isn't practical for wikipedia articles to completely match other language wikipedia's.Polyamorph (talk) 09:55, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
