Much work needed! For a start, there was irony in naming it after porridge made from maize, or in South African English, mealies. This also has the meaning of easily-made bland everyday pap. The Lawless One (talk) 22:50, 29 January 2010 (UTC)Reply

Looks like this article needs a lot of attention. I am putting a NPOV template on it (for several reasons; it's not hard to pick them out), and hopefully someone who has some more information about mbaqanga can come fix it... Unfortunately I don't know enough myself, but I do know that this music had a ressurgence in post-apartheid South Africa, which isn't mentioned at all in the article. Anyone? --Romarin 18:02, 2 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't think the article has a non-neutral perspective, it just seems to be relying on old sources of information. Hence it talks about Mbaqanga being "rural music" which became popular in the 1950s and then died down. I believe it needs to be updated, explaining the resurgence of this music in the 1980s, as well as during the post-apartheid era (from 1994 onwards). I am sorry that I am not able to do this myself because I don't have the depth of knowledge required to flesh it out properly. --Anonymous 19:01, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have changed the POV to a more neutral style and added post-apartheid references. DocDee 18:27, 28 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

This article is somewhat one sided politically. The growth of the genre was largely due to the radio station Radio Zulu who pumped it mercilessly in the 1970s and 80s. So ironically the apartheid system, through its "tribal" radio policy was responsible, at least partly for its success. Genre like Jazz and Blues suffered on these stations. Mbaquanga is not Jazz! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.241.25.240 (talk) 16:17, 3 January 2010 (UTC)Reply
