Libertarianism

edit

"In his commentary Ridley is relatively unabashed in revealing his personal commitment to a libertarian philosophy, in constrast to Richard Dawkins, who holds similar positions on gene selectionism and atheism, but favors social democracy." I've read most of his books (though not the one on politics, which doesn't even get a mention here) and I've never seen any evidence that he's a "libertarian". Occasionally he argues that state intervention in commerce, e.g. fixing exchange rates, can be naive and counter-productive, but that doesn't make him Ayn Rand. And to mention "gene selectionism" in the same line as his politics just emphasises the spurious link between science and policy that he's argued against himself. Lfh 12:27, 10 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

What a pity that the same criteria were not applied to A. Barrington-Brown's photograph used on the inside page (opposite the title page) of "Francis Crick: Discoverer of the Genetic Code"?

It is severely cropped and there is no acknowledgement of copyright, unlike the author's official photograph on his personal web site!

You've raised an important point Martin which I think we should all take a moment to soberly consider. The attribution status of A. Barrington-Brown's photograph on the inside page of "Francis Crick: Discoverer of the Genetic Code" is an issue which has haunted me for as long as I can remember, along with solving world poverty and the ongoing Arab-Israeli crisis. Congratulations on an insightful, on-topic and generally highly interesting comment. Badgerpatrol 15:43, 5 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

We do need a photo though - a pity he couldn't be nice and GDFL himself. Added photo request. Richard001 23:39, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'll ask him to sort it out next time I see him. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Xtremerandomness (talkcontribs) 23:20, 11 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Matt Ridley's CV

edit

Currently (26 June 2008) Ridley's website has a page that's referred to as his "Full C.V.".

But for some reason, his employment history somehow fails to include either of the words "Northern" or "Rock".

Funny that.

I mean, I can understand why he might prefer not to announce to his US readership his links to the N.R. fiasco, but surely if he's going to edit the notable (newsmaking!) low points out of his cv, he shouldn't then be referring to it as his "Full C.V."? It's not like this was some insignificant spell as a work experience tea-boy, he was Chairman of the company when it went down in flames all over the national news. The event was large enough to have a significant impact on the UK national debt. Ho hum. ErkDemon (talk) 01:00, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Northern Rock - Skewed

edit

Not clear why half of this bio entry should be on Northern Rock. Is the link between his political views and the bank's failure really that obvious? It seems more like ideological point scoring (particularly as the author of the comments appears to come from a known polemicist (Monbiot)). Presumably there were plenty of heads of newly (semi-)nationalised banks who did not have libertarian views - should we join the dots between their political views and the applicable financial difficulties? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jedermann99 (talkcontribs) 04:03, 27 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
