Hello. I will be reviewing this article. I have experience with the type of article, having made Bayswater, Western Australia and Bedford, Western Australia into good articles. If you would like to, you could review some of my current GA nominations. I aim to complete my review within a week. On my initial look through the article, the sourcing looks good, however the several single sentence paragraphs probably need to be expanded or merged with other paragraphs. Steelkamp (talk) 02:47, 2 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Steelkamp Thank you! I look forward to your comments. --Prosperosity (talk) 03:07, 2 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Good article criteria edit

Criteria 1 edit

  Well written

  • Archaeological records date fishing activities in the area to at least the 1400s – This is ambiguous. It could mean thats when fishing activities began or when they stopped. Rewrite it as "Archaeological records date fishing activities in the area as far back as the 1400s. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • (not essential for GA) Saying 15th century instead of 1400s, early 18th century instead of early 1700s is preferred, because the latter can be either a decade or a century. MOS:CENTURY says When using forms such as the 1900s, ensure there is no ambiguity as to whether the century or just its first decade is meant. Considering early 1740s is said soon after the early 1700s, I think there is ambiguity. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • Originally the iwi were based on Maungakiekie / One Tree Hill, but after the death of paramount chief Tūperiri (circa 1795), the Māngere Bridge area and Onehunga became permanent kāinga (settlements) for Ngāti Whātua, the location chosen because of the good quality soils for gardening, resources from the Manukau Harbour, and the area being as a junction for surrounding trade routes. – This is a long sentence. Maybe split it before "the location chosen". Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • totals add to more than 100% since people could identify with multiple ethnicities – This may be better as a note, a la Auckland#Notes. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Like this? The Auckland article also has it in parenthesis, but I can easily make it a note. --Prosperosity (talk) 01:56, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yes, like that. Steelkamp (talk) 10:44, 10 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

How about this? I plan to have the Te Puea article done shortly, after which I could change it back. --Prosperosity (talk) 01:56, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
That's a good interim solution. Of course, creating the article is the best long term solution. Steelkamp (talk) 10:44, 10 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • I believe "odour" is the preferred spelling in New Zealand, rather than "odor". Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • In demographics, there are two sentences in a row starting with "There were". Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Changed. --Prosperosity (talk) 01:56, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • There are too many single sentence paragraphs in the demographics section. They can probably be combined to make two paragraphs for the entire section. Also, each paragraph there should end in the citation [1].
I've changed this a little, but the demographics sections are almost uniformly standardised among New Zealand suburb and town pages by one of the Wikipedia admins, Gadfium. I could alter the section further to have a better flow and be more relevant to the suburb page, but next time there's a statistics release by the government it's likely that everything will change back to the old style. What do you think about this section how it currently is? --Prosperosity (talk) 01:56, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
What you've done there is fine. Steelkamp (talk) 05:45, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Criteria 2 edit

  Verifiable with no original research

  • Check on Earwig's Copyvio Detector turned up clean. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • With pdf references such as [4], [5], [7], [10], [11], [15], [16], [19], there should be page numbers. Template:Rp will be useful for the references that appear multiple times and with different pages each time. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Will fix shortly. --Prosperosity (talk) 02:25, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
All long pdfs and books now have page refs. --Prosperosity (talk) 22:56, 8 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • The Ambury Regional Park and Māngere Lagoon areas have over 100 recorded archaeological sites – The reference says around 100 sites, not over 100 sites. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Puketutu Island / Te Motu a Hiaroa part of Māngere, not Māngere Bridge. If so, I don't think it should be in the natural areas section of the article. (mention in the history section is fine) Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
It's complicated! I included it for a few reasons:
  • It is a visually dominating feature of the suburb, alongside the mountain, bridge and harbour.
  • The major historical links (both pre-European and sewage plant era, when it was physically attached to Ambury), as well as being a part of the extended regional park complexes.
  • It is in "Māngere" as currently defined by Google Maps, but Auckland suburbs don't have official designations and borders (meaning Google Maps suburb boundaries periodically change).
I can move the content to a different article if you think it would fit better somewhere else. --Prosperosity (talk) 02:25, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Considering this, I am fine with it. In Australia, our suburb boundaries are very well defined, but I didn't know that wasn't the case in NZ. Steelkamp (talk) 05:44, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Criteria 3 edit

  Broad in its coverage

  • Politics section should have information on local government and national government. I notice there is mention of the Manukau Ward in the infobox, but no mention of it in the article's body, aside from in notable people. There is also no mention of what national electorate the suburb is in. If possible, also include election results for recent elections for polling places in the suburb, similar to Yarralumla, Australian Capital Territory#Politics. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Done. --Prosperosity (talk) 05:18, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • There is no information on buses that serve the suburb, and who operates them. More information on the proposed light rail would be good too, such as a proposed route through Māngere Bridge. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Done. The light rail plan is still in the unpublished planning stages - all we know is that there will probably be a light rail stop in the suburb. I can add this info when it gets announced! --Prosperosity (talk) 05:18, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Looking on Google Maps, I can see there is a tennis club, bowling club, scouts hall. I think these should be included somehow. Maybe renamed the section on Association football to amenities. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Done. --Prosperosity (talk) 05:18, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Is there information on when Ambury Park Centre and Auckland Seventh-day Adventist High School were founded. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
I've added details for the Seventh-day Adventist High School, but I can't source anything for the Centre in terms of when it began to act as a secondary school, just when the entire centre opened. Sometime between 1983 and 2004 (when the Education Review Office records of schools begin). The people who compiled List of schools in the Auckland Region couldn't find this out either. --Prosperosity (talk) 05:18, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • In 2019, the name of the suburb was officially gazetted as Māngere Bridge. – This is mentioned in the lead, but no where else. I feel the situation before this gazettal should be elaborated on. Questions include what suburb the area was in before this, and if it was even part of a gazetted suburb. This can be added on to the end of the history section. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
The gazetting changed "Mangere Bridge" to "Māngere Bridge" in official documents, adding a macron. The latter spelling with the macron was common before its official designation, and it wasn't a major change (e.g. something like Wanganui/Whanganui, adding a dual name in te Reo). I've added it to the prose, but outside of the official LINZ website I'm unlikely to find any information on this. --Prosperosity (talk) 05:18, 7 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Criteria 4 edit

  Neutral

Criteria 5 edit

  Stable

  • No edit wars occurring. This criteria is passed. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Criteria 6 edit

  Illustrated, if possible

  • Nice image in infobox. Better than just a random street. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Images are good. This criteria is passed. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Overall edit

This article was an interesting read, specifically with its geography and history. The largest issue is that many large references don't have page numbers, which makes it unreasonable for someone to verify those refs. I will place the article on hold now. Steelkamp (talk) 08:44, 3 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

The article is ready to pass now. Steelkamp (talk) 10:44, 10 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
That's great news! Thank you so much for the review! --Prosperosity (talk) 11:28, 10 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
