Made some translations

I made some tentative translations of French quotes into English and left the original French in place too. I read French pretty well but am neither a professional translator nor a historian, so hope others will read over what I've done and correct as needed. Editing this article

I have started editing this article section by section, cleaning up some typos and awkward phrasing where meaning got lost in translation. I am checking apparently reliable web-based sources on the definition of various Greek words, but am not a historian, so would appreciate someone more expert casting an eye to make sure I haven't unintentionally mangled anything. "Becoming a liturgist" section

I just overhauled this. Portions of the original were written in a style of verbose academic French, which I have not attempted to translate into verbose academic English. Instead, I tried to simplify as much as possible. I did note one inconsistency, which I left in the article but will think about some more: the section says that the liturgical class changed as families dwindled in wealth and the nouveau riche arose. Then it says later, that the liturgical class stayed the same, due to social stratification and passing on of the liturgical role from generation to generation within a family. Anyway, it was bracing to breathe Athenian air for an hour; now a reluctant return to the world of "The Jersey Shore" and Glenn Beck. Jonathanwallace (talk) 13:34, 10 December 2010 (UTC)

Done with main text

I just finished overhauling the main body of the article. I will next go through the notes, which also have some awkward and untranslated sections. After that, I will remove the flag at the top that the article needs attention. I noticed that the French original has several additional paragraphs on the decline of the liturgical system and its replacement by philanthropy. So, at some point I will translate those as well.
