Hey,

Can we move the more obscure US engine builders to this page? Currently it reads like a phone book, totally uninviting. Also, someone write some articles on the bigger builders plz, I've done the 4 here so far. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.81.76.183 (talk) 01:37, 24 October 2008 (UTC)

It "reads like a phone book" because it is a list. That is the purpose of this article.

The page was created by removing these lists from traction engine and steam tractor, where they were out-of-place, and combining them here. There are many precedents on Wikipedia for this kind of structure. In the future the list could be converted into a table format, providing additional information such as location, product ranges, number of engines built, etc

As for "someone write some articles on the bigger builders plz", please feel free to do so. There are few contributors for such information, and my knowledge/information/bias is very much towards UK manufacturers, so I cannot create them.

British Manufacturers list

Removed the words "Most prolific" from lead to list, as there is no 'other' list so this one should list them all as the primary articles on steam refer here for 'List of manufacturers'. Even if they have no article they should be listed here at least, preferably with a ref to "verify existence" A lot will have very little published info to actually create anything more than a stub anyway. (and one/ two line stubs serve no purpose other than creating dead end links). Any reason why the Header does not list steam wagons among types ? - BulldozerD11 (talk) 11:53, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Ref steam wagons...there's a list of manufacturers in the steam wagon section of the T.E. article (in preparation for the section being split off as a separate article). Most companies concentrated on one or other, even if they produced both, so separate lists seemed appropriate.

Yes I saw that short list but generally in-article lists are:

1. A Short summary of major players (not a list of all players).
2. There is a strong anti red links in articles editorial tendency (which means its not as clear that an article(potential) is missing, were as in lists (some) it is more accepted to have links to show required articles.

That was partially the logic behind it and that most of the other related articles link to this list, and several manufacturers fall into several classes of vehicle. I'm experimenting with a table on my other project for lists of manufactures to convey more info in a summary form Here (is missing some entries yet).

I thought I'd put up a comment so you could see my reasoning / logic, I know you have an Idea of where the steam articles are going and working to get a lot more logical structure and clarity to them. I vaguely remember reading that there were fewer than 20 (?) manufacturers of steam wagons, and the vast majority were British. As a radical idea, how about a separate List of steam wagon manufacturers to cover them. I would envisage the list as being a series of summary paragraphs, which would allow us to link-in to and describe the minor manufacturers (such as Bristol C&W). Each section would have a 'main' link, as appropriate, and it would be reasonable to briefly mention (and link) what else they made, although the summary should concentrate on the steam wagon aspect.

I'll get on with this at lunchtime, and also split-out steam wagon...

As for red links, they are tolerated in lists, but should be permitted in articles too. However, I would guess that a list of redlinks in an article might be frowned upon. Any editor who insists on removing redlinks should be challenged!

Stage one 'completed'. Steam wagon notes moved from traction engine to steam wagon. So that's one anachronism resolved. New article needs a lot of work! List is yet to be started.

Can anybody add about the Toronto steam tractor maker, American-Abell Engine and Thresher Company...? All I've got is a pic of a museum placard describing one of the products: a 24 tonne monster that burned 2.3 tonnes of coal a day!
