I wonder if you can categorise jazz within pop, as has been done here?

It seems to me that pop music is so broadly defined it has little meaning other than its exclusions!

Is there any evidence of expert knowledge supporting this approach to categorising pop music?

Heavy metal

If the article on heavy metal music states heavy metal is a genre of rock music, why is metal a separate genre in this article? Ostalocutanje (talk) 13:53, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

Where have Rock music's sub sub genres gone?

What happened to all the sub sub genres of Rock music? Like, Britpop used to be a sub genre of Alternative rock, and Thrash metal was found under Heavy metal. They are still discussed as such in their respective articles, however, in the List of popular music genres, they now show up as straight Rock sub genres each, which I find is a step back in the development of this list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jfbprivate (talk • contribs) 21:24, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

I think that the genres should be combined as much as possible, even at the risk of offending people who have a favorite genre. There are simply too many genres at this time, not just in rock but in all categories. 24.27.31.170 (talk) 20:28, 28 December 2011 (UTC)Eric

In what universe is noise rock popular?

The same question can be asked of half of the genres on this list. 'Popular' is a huge misnomer. Ignoring the fact that 'art music' is a pretentious label added so the classical scene can feel better about itself, wouldn't it be easier/quicker to list the genres that are 'art music' than the ones that aren't, getting around two problems (the length and the bad title). 143.92.1.32 (talk) 01:34, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

Popular has two meanings, in this case the older one "of the people in implied as opposed to art music. It means that genres do not have to sell a lot of records to be included in a list of popular music genres.--SabreBD (talk) 06:43, 23 May 2012 (UTC)

You have a point, but I'm not so sure. Today's pop may be tomorrow's classic. Mozart, Beethoven and Bach were pop stars in their day, one might say. Before the advent of recording, people had no choice but to go to live concerts, and the musicians not only played their "hits" but indulged in improvisation for the audience, which of course we will never hear. 24.27.31.170 (talk) 20:25, 28 December 2011 (UTC) Eric

Popular music?
