edit"Botswana is a one party dominant state with the Botswana Democratic Party in power. Opposition parties are allowed, but are widely considered to have no real chance of gaining power." It is laughable that such an introduction leads into the following statement: "There is no reason to conclude that the Botswana elections are not free and fair." The wikipedia article titled 'Dominant-party system' refers to such 'democracies' as "soft authoritarianism."

editThe idea of free and fair elections is one where people are not bludgeoned to death for a political belief, and can go to the polls without fear of retribution. Even if opposition parties have no real chance of winning, at least that is because people choose not to support them. I talk about this in deferance to Zimbabwe, where even though a majority of the population supports the opposition party, through intimidation and rigging of the elections, the ruling party still retains power. Please, when talking about African politics, keep your laughing to yourself on issues of free and fair elections in what is possibly the only truly democratic government in Africa.
Thanks
