More steps to universal suffrage. First commoner to be PM. First house of commons. First House of Lords. First cabinet, first <qualifier> etc. minister. Rich Farmbrough, 10:09, 25 April 2010 (UTC).Reply
I believe a man of Malaysian descent became the first East Asian British MP this year. I'd also note Stephen Twigg as the first person to be openly gay at the point of first election to parliament.--MartinUK (talk) 21:28, 13 December 2015 (UTC)Reply

What about the Welsh PM Lloyd George? Messlo (talk) 01:34, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply

First black MP?

edit

Intriguingly, a reporter interviewing Bernie Grant on the night of the 1987 general election told him that this was the first time "since 1929" that there were black MPs in Parliament. (Here, around 5:25.) I can't find any information about a hypothetical black MP in 1929, though. Aridd (talk) 22:13, 11 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Probably Shapurji Saklatvala, if the interviewer was following the trend of the time for describing South Asians as black. Sophie means wisdom (talk) 14:24, 8 December 2013 (UTC)Reply
Good point; thanks. Aridd (talk) 20:18, 5 April 2014 (UTC)Reply

First black MP

edit

It seems the section has been changed, reverted as a contribution by a blocked user (allowed, but not mandatory) and then the changes re-instated by another IP user. For my part, I do not see any reason to exclude John Stewart or Henry Yorke from the list. They are cited, and it does not seem to be disputed that they were of mixed European and African ancestry. In Britain, unlike certain other countries, a mixed-race person **is** considered to be black. I understand that this goes against claims in other reputable sources that the three black Labour MPs were "the first black British MPs", but I think this can be fairly assessed to be a mistake given the verifiable existence of these two gentlemen. Would anyone like to voice an opposing view? Quantum Burrito (talk) 16:59, 11 June 2020 (UTC)Reply
